The program will include an overview of liver transplantation history and trends, changes to immunosuppression, ways to increase the donor pool based on donation after cardiac death or lung donor. New ideas such as Xenotransplant and Cell therapy will be addressed. Dr. Steven Hanish is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Hanish specializes in Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery, as well as both kidney and pancreas transplantation. He has expertise in the surgical management of both primary and metastatic disease to the liver. He has a special interest in Cholangiocarcinoma and received subspecialty training in laparascopic liver resection.Dr. Hanish's research interest focuses on outcomes of liver transplant recipients and those patients with primary hepatic malignancies and the use of MRI in the diagnosis of liver tumors, both benign and malignant. Moreover, he has been active on both the national and local levels in increasing organ donation and process optimization to improve patient outcomes.
