St. Cuthbert’s Primary School St. Cuthbert’s Primary School Promoting Positive Behaviour Information for Parents / Carers Our Aim Our aim is to: Help pupils to fulfil their potential to the full in every aspect of their development: spiritual; academic; personal; physical: social and emotional. To promote a positive school ethos through positive behaviour strategies and celebration of success. To raise standards of attainment, behaviour and attendance for all pupils. To involve parents, pupils and staff in setting standards of behaviour within the school. To enable pupils to manage their own behaviour effectively while respecting the rights of others. To inform parents and pupils of sanctions that will be taken for negative behaviour. To develop a variety of social and citizenship skills within school contexts. The relationship between pupils and school staff is based on mutual respect and consideration. The positive ethos of our school will be maintained by pupils, parents and school staff demonstrating mutual consideration and respecting school rules. We also adopt a positive attitude to those pupils who find this idea unfamiliar or difficult to accept. In exceptional circumstances, provision is made to respond to the needs of individual pupils. Any form of bullying will not be tolerated in St. Cuthbert’s Primary School. Managing Positive Behaviour Positive behaviour is achieved in two ways: 1. Prevention – preventative strategies which encourage each pupil to develop a sense of personality and self-discipline. 2. Management – when negative behaviour occurs we need to be able to respond positively and effectively. Our Health and Wellbeing programme explores a number of themes which help children to understand and manage their behaviour. The development of a respectful and tolerant attitude is also encouraged through our Religious Education programme of study. Roles and Responsibilities The promotion of positive behaviour is the collective responsibility of all pupils, parents and members of school staff. Rules and Expectations In St. Cuthbert’s we: Follow all instructions given by an adult member of staff Keep unkind words to ourselves Always tell the truth Keep hands and feet to ourselves at all times Always walk School expectations: Pupils are expected to take care and value school property and equipment Pupils are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times while under the jurisdiction of the school Pupils are not allowed to bring any potentially dangerous objects to school that could harm themselves or others, or electronic objects such as mobile phones, DSs, MP3 players as they can cause distractions in classrooms or can get damaged and lost. Promoting Positive Behaviour Revised August 2014 St. Cuthbert’s Primary School Agreement can be made with the Head Teacher for senior pupils to bring mobile phones but they must be left at the school office during the day. The phones are left at the owners’ risk. Pupils are not allowed to leave the school grounds during the normal school hours without first having obtained permission from the school. Promoting Positive Behaviour Strategies We use a wide variety of strategies to reward good behaviour. These range from words of praise and friendly gesture to the more formal aspects detailed below. House System: There are 5 houses in St. Cuthbert’s Primary. St Andrew, St. Columba, St. John Ogilvie, St. Margaret and St. Ninian. Pupils are awarded points throughout the school day by all members of staff, in recognition of good behaviour, kindness to others and effort. Golden Time: Golden Time is used as reward for positive behaviour during the working week within class. Golden Time takes place on a Friday afternoon from 2.15pm to 2.45pm. All pupils begin the week with 30 minutes of Golden Time. Pupils may lose their Golden Time for failing to adhere to school rules. (Details of this are given in the Sanctions / Consequences section) Star Card: Pupils will be given a Gold Star if they have maintained all their Golden Time. A coloured star will be given to any pupil who has lost part of their Golden Time and an explanation given. No star is awarded to any child who has lost all their Golden Time but a written explanation is provided for parents. Parents / Carers are asked to sign the Star Cards weekly. Whole School Assembly: Every class teacher nominates one person to be Pupil of the Week for behaviour, effort or achievement and another for Star of the Week which recognises attainment in a particular curricular area.. Sanctions / Consequences – Key Steps When a child does not respond to positive behaviour strategies the following procedures will be implemented: 1. Verbal warning will be given by staff member. 2. A further warning with the child moving from green to amber status. 3. Finally a move to red status resulting in the deduction of 5 mins Golden Time. After this the child returns to green status. Class Teachers should complete a yellow slip explaining why the child has moved to red. These slips should accompany children to the Principal Teacher and will also be shared with parents if necessary. For exceptional circumstances Senior Management Team would become involved immediately. Class teachers should send class messenger with card to school office. Mrs Robinson will then inform Mrs McCart or Mrs Hendry who will then report to class. If a child loses all Golden Time before Friday at 2.15pm then they are sent to Mrs Hendry. 1. First visit to Mrs Hendry - verbal warning discussion about behaviour 2. Second visit to Mrs Hendry – contact parents by phone / letter 3. Third visit to Mrs Hendry – parents are invited to school to discuss appropriate strategies for behaviour management with Class Teacher and Head Teacher. On a Friday at 2.15pm any child who has lost part of their Golden Time will report to Mrs McCart with their Star Card for completion and will engage in a Time to Think activity. Mrs McCart will contact parents of pupils who are repeatedly losing part of their Golden Time in the first instance. Pupils who have lost all their Golden Time report to Mrs Hendry and points 1-3 above are followed.
