Dear Parents/Carers,
During the spring term, those of us in Key Stage 1 will be following a unit of work which focuses on the historical theme of ‘People
of the Past – Significant People’.
This unit is part of the International Primary Curriculum. This Curriculum sets out very clearly what the children will learn in three
different areas:

The subjects of the Curriculum: as a wide range of challenging learning goals.
Personal Development: characteristics, which will help pupils, become more responsible, independent learners.
International Understanding: this will give children an understanding of the contribution of their own country as well as the
interdependence on other countries.
Each unit of work contains a number of specific learning targets. Those in relation to each area of the Curriculum we aim to teach
are set out below:
In History, we’ll be finding out:

how to explore the decisions that important people had to make in the past

use a living graph to explore how a person from history may have been feeling

compare what life was like at different times in the past
In Art, we’ll be finding out:

how to explore the work of famous artists

create a portrait of a friend

exploring portraits of famous people from the past

paint a scene in the style of a famous artist
In Geography, we’ll be finding out:

how people in the past travelled to different destinations

about Florence’s journey through Europe
In Science, we’ll be finding out:
how to investigate our senses
about the human body


In D.T., we’ll be finding out:

how to design, make and evaluate a healthy lunchbox
In International, we’ll be finding out:

about the idea of ‘fairness’ and how to be a responsible citizen

why some people in the past wanted to make change
In Music, we’ll be learning:

to explore music by a famous composer

how to create our own music to tell the story of a famous composer
In P.E., we’ll be learning:

how to develop accuracy with rolling and aiming

to develop balance and co-ordination

how to participate in team games
In computing, we’ll be learning:

how to use the web to research about people of the past

to use search engines to find images relating to people of the past
In R.E., we’ll be learning:

to find out about what happens in a place of worship

to investigate beliefs of different faiths

about the Easter Story
In English, we’ll be reading and writing:

Houses and Homes poetry

The Three Little Pigs story

Fairytale information texts
In Maths, we’ll be learning how to:



solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division, calculating the answer using concrete,
pictorial and abstract support.
read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving subtraction and equals signs.
subtract two digit numbers
We already know the interest you take in your child’s work. If you can, please discuss with your child the work they have done as
the term progresses and let them teach you! However, if you have any knowledge, resources or expertise which could enhance
and enrich the experiences of all of our children, please do not hesitate to contact one of the school teachers or the school
office.
