Hippocratic Council 2013 - 2014 Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry University of Western Ontario Council Progress Report – November 13th, 2013 President – Daniela Kwiatkowski Welcome to the newest Hippocratic Council members: David Hudson (2017), Sponsorship Director, Windsor Aneesh Dhar (2017), Orientation Coordinator, London Scott Laing (2017), Orientation Coordinator, London I am really pleased with the progress that we continue to make as both a council and a school. Thank you to all students, staff supports, and faculty for your continued commitment to our goals. Over the past month Schulich students have been involved with local and regional initiatives, including attendance at OMSW 2013 in Toronto, Pink Tie Gala to raise awareness for Breast Cancer, Trick or Eat food and fund collection, and ongoing fundraising for Prostate Cancer through the Movember campaign. Student wellness and personal interests also remain a priority for us. Through SAC we have recognized some fundamental communication weaknesses, and we are working with the LEW and SST to find creative ways to disseminate information to students as well as remind them of existing support systems without causing content saturation. On Monday, October 28, we hosted our first SCaDS seminar (Schulich Career and Development Series), which was a collaboration with the Schulich Translation Research Club about the research opportunities available to Schulich students. This premier event was extremely well attended in both London and Windsor, and provided really valuable insight for improvements we can make for future presentations in this series. Conversation continues between Hippo, LEW, and UME to refine specific session objectives for the remaining sessions this year. The next SCaDS seminar is: CaRMS/Career Management 101: Reflections on Medical Training & Practice in a Time of Change with Dr. Rieder (11:30 AM in MSB146/MEB1115) Finally, we are making significant progress with our relationships within the broader Schulich community. Several Hippo executives attended a lunch meeting with Schulich Communications, and we were made aware of the various avenues for promotion of student achievements and initiatives. It also became apparent that opportunities for collaboration with other student bodies within Schulich, including Dentistry and Graduate Studies, are waiting to be explored. Following my brief Hippo Update to the Executive Council of the Schulich Committee, I was also contacted by Schulich Communications about working together to create a Style Guide for Hippo. Overall, I am exceptionally impressed with the work that we have been able to do so far this year and I am optimistic about the work yet to come. Academic Director – Dani Cadieux BCOE Update At the November PIC meeting, Academic Directors from Year 1 and 2 presented the BCOE reports for ITM, Ethics (Year 1) and Digestion and Nutrition. Survey response rates were around 60-70%, which is understandable considering the newly added survey burden of mandatory One45 surveys. The entire Academic Team would like to remind everyone that it is incredibly important for everyone to fill out BOTH types of survey as they serve very different, but complimentary purposes. Help out the Academic Team by doing your BCOE surveys and reaching out goal of 85% response rates. The HUMEC Award of Excellence was also presented to Blood (Year 1) and Reproduction (Year 2). Accreditation Update What is ISSTF? ISSTF is the Institutional Self Study Task Force. The goal of CACMS/LCME accreditation is to assess whether a school is compliant with the standards, and to foster critical self-assessment among key institution stakeholders-- a process known as self-study. The self-study: Reviews the data collected about the medical school and its educational program (Foundational Data), Identifies institutional strengths and issues requiring action, Defines strategies to ensure that the strengths are maintained and any problem areas identified are addressed effectively. Sub-Committees Our institutional self-study task force (ISSTF) and its six subcommittees conduct the self-study. For the taskforce, the faculty lead is Shannon Venance and the project manager is Lesley De Pauw. Each subcommittee has a London and Windsor lead. The subcommittees are working groups that review the relevant accreditation standards, information from the data, and other sources related to its specific area of responsibility and then write a report. The sub-committees are: Institutional Setting Educational Program Leading to the M.D. Degree (2 subcommittees)*, Medical Students*, Faculty, Educational Resources* *Students will sit on these committees UME Office Update In the administrative offices, as of November Monica Bishop will no longer be in the UME office as Evaluation Specialist for Undergraduate Medical Education. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors. It is already routinely mentioned at alumni events, but additionally advertising in the monthly e-newsletter through Schulich Communications is a high possibility. Alumni Relations is also considering using Tachycardia to steward donors to the school (offering tickets as thanks). Sponsorship We are working with the Sponsorship Directors on clarifying what exactly the new Tachycardia sponsorship package will include and how to approach past and future donors about it. USC Application The permit from Banting has been sent to USC for approval. We are one step closer to getting insurance for Tachycardia! Extra Microphones Merrymakers from all classes are in favour of getting more microphones for Tachycardia and our audio technician has agreed that it is feasible. Barring some unreasonable increase in cost, there will be more microphones! Athletics Director – Jen Mcguire MedGames planning is still going well. I am currently working on organizing sports, hotels, tshirts and transporation. If anyone still wants to come please contact me at jmcguire2016@meds.uwo.ca VP Communications – Camilla Stepniak Please take note of the new calendar posted outside the lounge in the glass case. It will be updated weekly and will reflect the Hippo/Schulich calendar online. It’s a great resource to quickly check clubs talks for the week and room locations! Also, please be on the lookout for your first video newsletter from the Hippocratic Council! As always, if you have any exciting events or news you would like to share with the rest of the school or to the greater community at large, do not hesitate to contact me! Social Director – Amanda Spadafora Pink Tie Gala: The 2nd annual Pink Tie Gala went well this year. We are still awaiting final numbers re: how much we fundraised. The photo opportunity with the male models went extremely well and is something that should definitely be considered for future Pink Tie events. Some improvements for next year that could be made include somehow getting the message out to more faculty/specifically inviting faculty who we have frequent communication with. Mr. Movember: The shave of on Oct. 31 was once again a very fun event! Luckily the boys only suffered a few minor cuts at the hands of their Mo’ Sista’s The Mr. Movember beauty pageant will be taking place at The Spoke on Saturday, Nov. 23 starting at 8:00. Look for sign up information for both Mo’ Bro’s and Mo’ Sista’s coming out soon! Also don’t forget to donate to your classes Mo team. This year we will also be having a friendly competition with the law students to see who can get the most donations – let’s show them who’s faculty is best!
