KEIO UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY CROSS-CULTURAL COLLABORATION AUGUST 3-18, 2012 Overview The Keio University/College of William & Mary Cross-Cultural Collaboration (CCC) is a cultural studies program centered around experiential learning, allowing both Japanese and American students to study questions of cultural difference and national identity. This program brings forty Japanese university students to America for 16 days to experience first-hand American society and culture with William & Mary graduate and undergraduate students. This summer marks the 22nd year of this unique collaborative program between Tokyo-based Keio University and the College of William & Mary. Students from both institutions spend 12 days in Williamsburg, participating in framework lectures and fieldwork activities. Keio participants conduct research for an extensive project and presentation drawn from information gathered in both Japan and the United States. William & Mary students work with the visiting Keio students to complete this research and participate in sharing and reflecting on their experiences and cultures. Then, the entire group and staff travel to Washington, D.C. for three days of guided sight-seeing activities and classroom discussions, exploring the cultural significance of the capital city to Americans. What Do W&M Students Do? During the last course of the 16-day program, each student works with a group of five Japanese students as a Peer Assistant (PA). You will help the Japanese participants in your Focus Group to conduct research in Williamsburg and develop a 30-minute group presentation. There will be two mandatory orientation sessions for all PAs: one afternoon session during a weekend before the end of the spring 2012 semester, and the second on August 2, the day before the Keio students arrive on campus. Your job duties will include the following: Attend lectures about different aspects of American culture with the students. Meet with the Keio students every day to facilitate the completion of their group research project, which they begin in Japan. Help them to focus and organize their ideas; work as a sounding board for their ideas. Assist the group with their presentation skills. Meet regularly with a graduate student instructor, who will monitor the progress of your group and lend assistance on occasion; update the instructor and work together to solve problems that may arise with your group’s project. Participate in program activities, sharing the experience with the Keio students. Reside in the hotel with the Keio students and program directors. Introduce the Keio students to life at William and Mary and help to ensure a safe and rewarding study abroad experience for them. KEIO UNIVERSITY, COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY CROSS-CULTURAL COLLABORATION AUGUST 3-18, 2012 How are W&M Students Compensated? You will earn $1,000 for your work, and all meals will be covered by the program through a combination of catered meals and a meal allowance. You will live in the Hospitality House during the program and share a room with one of the Keio students. During the Washington, D.C. portion of the program, the entire group will stay in a hotel near the William & Mary D.C. office near DuPont Circle. The cost of the hotel rooms will be covered by the program. Is the Whole Program “Academic”? The CCC provides learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. In past years, we have observed and participated in American culture at baseball games, square dances, the beach, museums, Busch Gardens, and shopping malls, to name just a few. One of the greatest benefits of the program is the strong and long-lasting friendships you forge with the Japanese students.
