Ceramic Unit Vocabulary
Ceramics- term used for pots, cups & sculptures made from hardened clay
Clay- Clay is a fine-grained soil that combines one or more clay minerals with traces of metal oxides and organic matter.
When fired at high temperatures, it hardens.
Kiln- used to fire clay at high temperatures
Fire- term used when clay is processed in a kiln at very high temperatures (usually over 1,500 degrees)
Slip- clay & water combined, used to hold clay together
Slab- clay method in which clay rolled out, usually with a rolling pin
Score- when clay is marked with grooves to hold slip
Beveled edge- to angle a clay edge at 45 degrees
Fettling knife- clay tool used to cut
Coil- term used for method of rolling clay between hands to form a rope
High relief- sculptural term when material is bumped out
Low relief- sculptural term when you carve into a sculpture and it recedes
Sculpture tool- wooden or wire tool used to carve details
