Weather Webquest
This is the webquest for 6th Grade Science
Let’s answer some questions about weather. Please follow the links
provided to answer the questions that are in BOLD. This is due in two
days.
Let's begin!
Here in Colorado, we sure do experience a lot of Thunderstorms,
especially in the spring months. Due to our amazing geography with the
mountains and the plains, the weather sure does change.
How do thunderstorms form?
Boy oh boy, do I like good links about Thunderstorms.
Check this site out!
A lot can be said about Precipitation, but whether we like it or not, we need
it. Some places get more of it, some places get less.
What causes precipitation?
Luckily in Colorado, we don't have any Hurricanes. We have a lot of other
weather phenomenas to deal with, but this is not one of them. Florida and
the Atlantic coast sure have to deal with them though.
What are five events that need to take place for a hurricane to form?
Global climate change is always sturring up Hurricane Energy. Whether we
like it our not, this is going to happen every year, especially during the
transition from Winter to Spring and Spring to Summer.
How is the energy of a warm sea transferred to a hurricane?

in Colorado and across the United States. It always seems to occur during
the Spring time when the air goes from cool to warm.
What type of storm, if it produces enough energy, forms a tornado?
We have all dealt with serious wind. However, Wind Speed and Tornadoes
seems to be something that go hand-in-hand.
At which speed does the wind have to travel to be considered a
tornado?
So you are out playing. You notice the sky is changing. You think that a
Tornado Approaching you is going to be dangerous.
Describe how it would look outside if a tornado were approaching?
I sure do like to see an Anemometer on the roof of a barn. I really think
they are cool when they have a chicken or something on it. I remember in
the movie Ratatoille that Remi was playing around one.
What are the two ways in which an anemometer (wind vane)
measures the wind speed?
So we all know what a Thermometer does. But do you really know how it
works?
A thermometer really does not measure the temperature of
something; rather it measures the temperature of itself. Explain this
statement.
Thank goodness for weather a

is not limited to the one we use when we are sick.
But what happens if we cannot open the link above. We have to look at
this link about Thermometers instead.
Name the four different types of thermometers that are explained in
this link.
Sometimes the best tool for measuring weather is a Barometer. We know
that the weather is changing, but it sure feels like the air around us is
changing as well. There has got to be something that tells us what that air
change really means.
How does a mercury barometer calculate the atmospheric pressure?
Seriously, a Barometer? How important is this thing?!
How does an aneroid barometer work?
Not all Barometer's work the same way.
What are some advantages that an aneroid barometer has over a
mercury barometer?
Sticking a glass outside does not make it a Rain Gauge. There are actually
dimensions that are required for a rain gauge to be deemed official.
Describe the dimensions of an official rain gauge?
A small cylinder we call a Rain Gauge sure can tell us a lot.
Why does one inch in an official rain gauge actually measure only
one – tenth of an inch of rain?
We deal with a lot of rain in Colorado's spring months. So much so that a
Rain Gauge will not give us a full measurement of how much is falling.
How is rainfall measured if it exceeds two inches?
When trees breathe out, they release oxygen into the air, and it mixes with
hydrogen to give us water. We use a Hygrometer to measure this mixture.
A hygrometer measures the humidity level in air and other gases.
What is humidity?
Special weather tools haven't been around forever. In fact, an early
Hygrometer was used with blond hair.
Why can human hair (blond) be used to measure humidity using a
mechanical hygrometer?
We all love balloons. How cool would it be to have Weather Balloons at
your next birthday party. I mean really! Huge balloons!
Weather balloons are launched twice a day all over the world. What
types of data do weather balloons gather?
We love Satellites for TV, but we also love satellites for predicting weather.
Why are satellites useful in predicting the weather?
Man, some Satellites sure are funky! They survey the world and tell us
about weather.
What does a Doppler radar do that makes it so important in predicting
weather?
