Show Me God
Romans 1:20-21
Intro
Lisa Baker, a 20 year old who is disenchanted with religion, still seeking, says, “All I want is reality
- show me God. Tell me what He is really like. Help me to understand why life is the way it is, and
how I can experience it more fully and with greater joy. I don’t want empty promises. I want the
real thing. And I’ll go wherever I find that truth system.”
Lisa is like a lot of people who want reality and want to experience life more fully and with
meaning. Basically people are looking for truth and will go anywhere to find the truth, as long as
they have an open mind. Notice what Lisa Baker said, “All I want is reality - show me God.”
There are many astronomers and astrophysicists who believe that we have undeniable evidence for
the existence of God.
The Limits of Science
Science has no laws or observations to show how something could have come from nothing. It
doesn't even have a theory to propose such an event. Science can observe only what is in existence
and study the formations but origins are outside of its domain. The ultimate origin of the universe is
impossible for science to study.
Milton Rothman (physicist) states, “there is no way of obtaining evidence concerning a prior
existence” (i.e., before the big bang).
Robert Jastrow writes: "Consider the enormity of the problem. Science has proven that the Universe
exploded into being at a certain moment. It asks, ‘what cause produced this effect?’ ‘Who or what
put the matter and energy into the universe?’ And science cannot answer these questions, because,
according to the astronomers, in the first moments of its existence the Universe was compressed to
an extraordinary degree, and consumed by heat of fire beyond human imagination."
Jastrow also said, "There is no doubt that a parallel exists between the big bang as an event and the
Christian notion of creation from nothing." It’s called Ex Nilho, which means something created
out of nothing.
Who or what created all this? What is the best explanation for the universe? I believe that atheism is
inadequate as a worldview because it cannot adequately explain the origin and existence of the
universe. The majesty and order of the universe and the wonder and complexities of life on earth,
cries out for an explanation. The atheist, however, is unable to provide a consistent one.
If they argue that matter is eternal, they are going against modern science which states that the
universe had a beginning. If the atheist affirms that the universe had a beginning, then he must
account for what caused it. Either way, the atheist cannot adequately explain the universe and this
world that is full of complex forms of life.
Dr. Robert Wilson, one of the discoverers of the microwave radiation that is still emanating from
the moment of the beginning of the universe, stated “Certainly there was something that set it all
1
off. Certainly, if you are religious, I can't think of a better theory of the origin of the universe to
match with Genesis.”
Einstein said, “I have a deep feeling of faith, a deep religiosity that comes from my appreciation of
the way the Lord made the universe.”
What About the Evolution Theory?
Many scientists are now questioning the Evolution theory. With the latest discoveries in the areas of
astronomy, and astrophysics, scientists are seeing more and more that the evolution theory does not
hold very well. Here are a few quotes from some famous scientists:
 Sir Fred Hoyle (British astronomer) quoted, “The chance that higher life forms might have
emerged in this way [Evolution] is comparable with the chance that a tornado sweeping
through a junkyard might assemble a Boeing 747 from the materials therein.”

Pierre-Paul Grassé (French Acadmie des Sciences) says, “To insist, even with Olympian
assurance, that life appeared quite by chance and evolved in this fashion, is an unfounded
supposition which I believe to be wrong and not in accordance with the facts.”
Cambrian Explosion
One of the biggest problems with the evolution theory is what scientists call the Cambrian
Explosion. The Cambrian Explosion is an event in which animal life appeared abruptly and
suddenly without any evolution process. This has been the greatest stumbling block for
evolutionists. We actually have evidence in the fossil record that biological life did not evolve but
appeared suddenly.
Dr. Stephen J. Gould (Professor of geology and Paleontology, Harvard University) writes,
“Paleontologists (and evolutionary biologists in general) are famous for their facility in devising
plausible stores but they often forget that plausible stories need not be true.”
There are many scientists who do not hold to the evolution theory because the evidence from the
Cambrian Explosion fossil record and the fine tuning of the universe contradicts the theory.
3 Themes of Evidence for the Existence of God
1. Space Time Theorem: everything can be traced back to a singular beginning of matter and
energy – space and time.
2. The Anthropic Principle: that the conditions in the universe were finely tuned to make life
possible. It is well known that our existence in this universe depends on numerous
cosmological constants and parameters whose numerical values must fall within a very
narrow range of values. If even a single variable were off, even slightly, we would not exist.
3. The Cambrian Explosion: That life appeared abruptly and suddenly thus pointing to a
Creator.
We can’t deny that there is so much evidence for a Supreme Intelligence because of the tremendous
complexity and fine tuning of the universe and life.
Words and expressions used by scientists:
Somebody fine tuned nature, super intellect, monkeyed, overwhelming design, miraculous, hand of
God, ultimate purpose, God's mind, exquisite order, very delicate balance, exceeding ingenious,
supernatural Agency, supernatural plan, tailor-made, Supreme being, and providentially crafted.
Obviously these words and expressions apply to a Person.
God has to be a personal being. Only a personal being can manifest intellect, knowledge, creativity,
and power.

As science continues its research into the 21st century it has yet to come up with a natural
explanation for the universe's origin. It would seem that the supernatural explanation found in
Hebrews 11:3 is the best one: “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's
command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” This kind of faith is very
reasonable and lines up with the scientific evidence.
Did you know that The Bible has ten times more to say about cosmology then all the religious
books of the world put together? And that the Bible is the most accurate than all other religious
books?
Christianity answers this fundamental question. The Judeo-Christian God fits the picture so well of
the Creator.
British astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle too recognizes “The Judaeo-Christian idea of a deity outside the
Universe is a unique concept among the world's early religions.”
Cosmology
Cosmology is the study of the universe as a whole - its structure, origin, and development.
Cosmology is not just for PhD’s but for everyone. Dr. George Roche (a historian) said that
cosmology “really does matter, and matter very much, how we think about the cosmos.” What
Roche is saying is that our concept of the universe shapes our world view, our philosophy of life
and the decisions and actions that we make.
Let’s say that for some the universe was not created and came about by accident. This would mean
then that the universe has no meaning and human life has no purpose because we are accidents by
random processes. Therefore a mechanical chain of events determines everything and the
“Universe” is the only ultimate reality. This would also mean that morality, ethics, and the sense of
being and worth may be temporarily useful but ultimately irrelevant and meaningless.
On the flip side, if the universe was created then there must be reality beyond the confines of the
universe and the Creator is the ultimate reality. Therefore the Creator is the source of life and
establishes its purpose and meaning. It is the Creator’s personality which defines personality and the
Creator’s character which defines morality.
Conclusion
The point is this – to study the origin and development of the universe is to pursue the meaning and
purpose of life. Why was I born? What is the ultimate purpose of my life? I believe that we cannot
deny that cosmology has deep philosophical and theological consequence. But there are those who
do not make this connection or acknowledge this relationship.
Dr. Francis Collins (director of the Human Genome Project) made that connection. He said, “I had
to admit that the science I loved so much was powerless to answer questions such as "What is the
meaning of life?" "Why am I here?" "Why does mathematics work, anyway?" "If the universe had a
beginning, who created it?" "Why are the physical constants in the universe so finely tuned to allow
the possibility of complex life forms?" "Why do humans have a moral sense?" "What happens after
we die?"” He continues, “But reason alone cannot prove the existence of God. Faith is reason plus
revelation, and the revelation part requires one to think with the spirit as well as with the mind. You
have to hear the music, not just read the notes on the page. Ultimately, a leap of faith is required.”
Collins was an atheist who became a believer in God later in life.
3
Dr. Francis Collins admitted, “As the director of the Human Genome Project, I have led a
consortium of scientists to read out the 3.1 billion letters of the human genome, our own DNA
instruction book. As a believer, I see DNA, the information molecule of all living things, as God's
language, and the elegance and complexity of our own bodies and the rest of nature as a reflection
of God's plan.”
The evidence is there not only in space but even in our own bodies. Nature attests clearly to a
Creator God who planned it all.
I like what Pascal said: “There are only three types of people; those who have found God and serve
him; those who have not found God and seek him, and those who live not seeking, or finding him.
The first are rational and happy; the second unhappy and rational, and the third foolish and
unhappy.”
Folks, the heavens are declaring the glory of God (Psalm 19:1). They are showing us God. They are
pointing to the Creator, a personal Creator who loves us.
