Newsletter 2 September 13th, 2013 Dear Parents, It was wonderful to see so many parents, grandparents and other family members joining the children for lunch yesterday. We took lots of photographs which will be used on the school website and for the frames in the entrance hall. This event was such a success that we will be repeating it again at regular intervals. We were able to organise this joint lunch because Years 4, 5 and 6 were on an exciting trip to Lord’s Cricket Ground to participate in cricket training and see professionals play the game. Reports back from all staff and particularly from Mr. Michael was that all children were amazingly well behaved and a credit to us all. Wrap Around After School Care Wrap Around Club has started and many more parents are taking advantage of the excellent child care provided. Wrap Around Club takes place on Monday-Friday so if you are in need of child care, please speak to Miss Simmons for more information. She can be contacted either through the school office or on jsimmons@stsavioursprimary.co.uk Little House of Fairy Tales is on track for a very special day! Please highlight 4 th October in diaries! Plans for Little House of Fairy Tales are well under way and there are lots of amazing activities planned for the children. We need you to now start helping us to collect bits and pieces – so here is how: Each family to collect 4-5 large cardboard boxes. Please flatten these along the given seams and bring into school. Please give these to Mr. Higgins who is kindly storing these for us. You can also save cardboard tubes from lavatory rolls and kitchen paper towels Watch out for the Bunting Pattern letter that will be coming home on Tuesday. The plan is to create enough handmade bunting made by the children and their families to be hung on the railings around the school. Consider using the small brown envelope attached to the Bunting Pattern letter to make a donation to this wonderful day. We have organised lots of creative people to come along and work with the children. Some are parents and some are “outside” professionals. Don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself to be artistic, your help and support is what we really need. You may be able to help make bunting, you may want to make adult refreshments during the day (tea and coffee!), you may like to make bacon sandwiches on the actual morning or you may like to help set up on Thursday night or clear up on Friday afternoon (very important!). The main thing is that we want you to be involved to make this a truly magical day. The main feature activity on the day will be the opportunity for the children to make their own “machines” from cardboard with Darcy Turner. Inspiration for this came from a very moving story of a little boy in America making a cardboard arcade during one summer. You can have a look at some of the ideas he had on his website at http://cainesarcade.com/ We will be allowing the children to watch parts of the story during assemblies and special lessons in the hope that this will start them thinking about their own ideas. Our other big project for the day is the building of an eco car called a Goblin. This is a very real car and we are hoping to be able to drive it across the playground at the end of the day. Mr. Higgins, Mr. Harding, Mr. Corston and Mr. Scourfield (Year 1’s Ruby’s Dad) are on-board to help create the skeleton of the car before the Big Day and this will involve Year Six children. If you are interested (either as an adult or a child), please let me know on Monday. Special Notice For Nursery and Reception Classes: Our youngest members of Little House of Fairy Tales can find the excitement of the day a little overwhelming so they have their very own version of the events in their classrooms. Reception children will take their Buddies around the activities until 10:30 a.m. when they will return to their class and Year Six can explore at will. Don’t worry, everyone has a wonderful time but just at an age appropriate level. After School Clubs After School Clubs will be starting in the week beginning 16th September. These are for children in Year One to Six. Well done to everyone who has already sent their form in but please don’t forget to return forms in on Monday as popular clubs fill up very quickly. Mrs. Pearman is the person to contact if you need any advice and she can be contacted either on the school telephone number or at mpearman@stsavioursprimary.co.uk Notification of which clubs children have been placed in will be sent out next week along with the cost for the whole term. Parents can pay for clubs either half termly, termly or £2 per club per week whichever is most convenient. The money raised is used to provide additional resources for clubs and for the ICT development fund which has been created to upgrade our computers in the next few years. We are rightly proud of our after school provision and the £2 cost is remarkably good value for money. Staff that run these clubs do so because they love working on different and varied activities that are not linked to the National Curriculum. Clubs are never meant to be hard work, are not additional homework clubs and, some, allow the children to express their creativity with low level input. Either way, the children and staff have a great time and always finish the hour with a smile! Secondary Transfer – Now the hard work begins! Thank you to everyone who came to the secondary transfer meeting on Wednesday. Year Six parents will now have received the Secondary School Choices book from the City Council. Similar documents from other local authorities can be downloaded from the relevant websites. Please check these carefully as they have dates for the open days and evenings of schools that you might be interested in. Children in Year Six may accompany their parents to open days but please make sure you inform the school office of the dates your child will be absent. Children in other year groups may not have time out of school but any parent and child can attend open evenings arranged by schools. When Year Six parents have visited all the schools they are interested in, please make an appointment with the school office so that we can discuss your choices and find the best order for these. This is a stressful time for everyone but please remember we are here to help and hold your hand! Uniform Sales Every Tuesday School uniform is available every Tuesday morning from 8:45a.m. Miss Murray will be joined by Mrs. Pearman and Miss Smith to help make this a speedy process. Everything will happen in the hall and a receipt will be issued for your records. Uniform will not be sold on any other day. PTA AGM Thank you to all the parents who attended the PTA AGM yesterday. This was an exciting time as we were able to look back on all the exciting events held last year as well as considering the fun things we are going to do this year. Minutes of the meeting will be in the entrance hall folder as well as the accounts that were presented to parents. The Life Bus is Visiting St. Saviour’s on Wednesday 25 th September for children in Nursery, Reception, Years One and Two. Please look out for further information in ChitChat next week. Individual Photos - A Problem With The Date We have decided that as not all the Nursery children will be full time on the proposed date (17th September), it will be best to postpone the individual photographs until the beginning of October. We are waiting for a new date to confirmed and will let you know asap. Mrs. El-Sahn and Ms. Samuel have asked for more parent volunteers to help make hot chocolate for the children at lunch time – please let us know if you are able to help.
