LUNCH CLUBS IN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
GROUND RULES
Introduction
High School Youth Tutors have been meeting on a regular basis to share common issues
and to develop approaches appropriate to their work. During the discussions it became
apparent that there were differing practices around a range of issues. The issue that was of
most concern was the operation of Lunch Clubs. They agreed that a common approach was
needed and to assist in this development ground rules were established.
They later agreed that the ground rules should be circulated to colleagues in other
community colleges for their consideration and comments. It was suggested that any
comments would best be made through Area Youth Worker's meetings where there would
be further opportunities for discussion.
Ground Rules on Lunch Clubs
1.
Lunch Clubs should last for a minimum period of 50 minutes contact time. Any setting
up that is required should be additional.
2.
They should be core funded by the school and not from Part time Youth Leadership
resources.
3.
The school should acknowledge the wear and tear on Youth Work equipment with a
financial contribution.
4.
Lunch clubs should operate within the framework of the youth work .curriculum and
any youth work specific rules observed.
5.
Young people must be involved in the organisation and running of the programme.
6.
They should be staffed by Workers with an understanding of Youth Work principles
and practice.
7.
They should not be dominated by a single activity or year group although the needs of
year nine students should be given priority where appropriate.
8.
There must be an internally agreed process for deciding on the maximum number of
young people to be allowed into a session for reasons of quality of work and safety.
