Purpose:
To lead and develop philanthropy and the growth of
membership and voluntary donations across the Trust,
changing culture, engaging staff and volunteers and
significantly increasing independent income.

Task Description
CCT’s development (fundraising) work has made great strides in recent years
with the establishment of regular giving, a membership base and steadily
growing donations. It is now ready to go to the next level in terms of numbers
and sizes of gift, attracting a new group of high net worth individuals, building
legacies and endowment, and running capital campaigns.
This important, senior post will lead a Trust-wide strategy to build relationships
and increase income from individual donors, membership, community
fundraising, corporates, and trusts and foundations. The postholder will lead
and manage the development and marketing team, build a network of high
value individual donors through effective cultivation and stewardship and drive
forward a rolling programme of capital campaigns and endowment growth to
meet demanding voluntary income targets over the next three years and
beyond.
The Development Director will be a member of the senior management team
and will both deliver direct development activity and work with regional and
national colleagues to support Trustees, staff and volunteers in building skills,
increasing motivation and a culture of development across the Trust.
The post is offered on a five-year contract.
Key Tasks
1) Lead development strategy
The postholder will have overall corporate responsibility for significantly
increasing independent income across the Trust and will drive a programme of
cultural and practical change to foster a greater understanding of development
and development skills in order to achieve it. S/he will:

develop the Trust’s development strategy to drive independent income
growth and maximise net income and return on investment;

lead the implementation of that strategy, ensuring that development
objectives are embedded in all operational plans and budgets and that
development targets are set and owned by managers across the Trust;

develop and support the full range of charitable development activity
including identifying, engaging and cultivating prospects and developing
projects using internal and external partnerships to pull in the necessary
resources;

provide the Trust’s strategic lead on marketing and external communications
strategy;

ensure that development targets are monitored, met and reported on to
senior management and trustees
2) Develop donor relations and capital appeals
The development director will work with the chief executive, directors and
trustees to cultivate and steward new networks of high value donors and:

develop and support a rolling programme of capital appeals and associated
campaign boards to raise significant sums to repair and adapt CCT buildings
and promote their use;

maximise opportunities for attracting donations and high value gifts through
relationship-building by Trustees, celebrity supporters, major donors and
senior staff;

ensure that regional relationships with prospects and donors are well
supported; and

ensure the highest professional standards of donor and funder relations
cultivation, stewardship and management
3) Develop people and resources
The postholder will lead the national development and marketing team and
provide professional support to them and to development staff in regional
teams. S/he will work closely with other directors to ensure a strong and
professional approach to development and marketing across the Trust and will:

establish and embed the training, skills development and cultural change
programmes needed to transform staff and volunteers’ propensity and ability
to generate income;

ensure that the necessary professional and administrative resources,
materials and skills are in place to support increase charitable development
activity in all teams; and

encourage innovation and ensure effective, professional management and
administration of all development activity, membership schemes and events;

manage national marketing and communications staff to achieve greater
profile and support delivery of the visitor services and enterprise strategy, in
particular tourism marketing

4) Provide corporate and brand leadership
The postholder will drive development and marketing strategy within a
collaborative approach across teams and at all levels. S/he will work with
directors to encourage innovation and initiative within a corporate framework
and a strong, consistent national brand.

Person Specification
We are looking for a proven business leader who has transformed performance
and culture across a range of sectors. The successful candidate will have:
Essential
1. A strong track record of personal impact on income growth in a charitable
environment
2. Significant experience of national fundraising from multiple sources including
major donors, legacies, trusts and foundations and membership
3. Experience of running successful major capital appeals
4. Proven skills in cultivating and stewarding donors and building networks of
high net-worth individuals
5. Experience of leading marketing and communications strategies
6. Ability to work creatively and effectively in a senior management team
7. An understanding of and support for the Trust’s objectives
8. Understanding of the role of volunteers and communities in delivering
income-generating objectives
9. Excellent interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills
10.Significant leadership and people management experience
11.A demonstrable track record of building and developing a high performing
fundraising operation

Desirable
An interest in and empathy for the conservation and use of historic buildings and
experience of working in the cultural sector
Job Requirements
All staff at the Trust are expected to have good IT/computer skills especially
Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint and relevant databases and to be
administratively self sufficient.
A willingness to travel, using public transport as far as possible, and to work on
occasion in the evening and at weekends, is required, as is attendance at
regional staff meetings and some full staff meetings in other parts of England.
