There has been some excellent progress made in the CAGP Banff Review Course
and Online Study Group.
CAGP Banff Review Course in Geriatric Psychiatry. The CAGP is pleased to
offer for the first time an intensive 2-day review course in Geriatric Psychiatry on
Sunday, September 23 and Monday, September 24, 2012 in Banff, Alberta
immediately following the joint scientific meeting of the CAGP and the CCSMH.
Over the course of two days, 10 speakers will be covering 15 major topics in
geriatric psychiatry, including disorders such as major depression, dementia,
substance abuse, delirium, and consent legislation. For the full program and list
of speakers please click here.
The course will be co-chaired by Dr. Mark Rapoport, a board member of the
CAGP, and Dr. Andrew Wiens, a geriatric psychiatrist at University of Ottawa.
CAGP National Online Study Group. On Monday, October 1, 2012 CAGP will
also launch the CAGP National Online Study Group. Because of the limitation of
the 2-day course, many topics in geriatric psychiatry will not be covered in Banff
in September. In order to cover a broader array of topics, and to provide
"booster" education sessions for members preparing for the Royal College
examination in geriatric psychiatry, the CAGP has also developed a novel onlinestudy group with 22 modules, which will continue until August 12, 2013. Every
two weeks, a new topic will be introduced. Faculty covering each topic will post
excellent up-to-date review papers and will moderate an online-discussion group
format with members in groups of 6 or 8.
The course will be co-chaired by Dr. Mark Rapoport, a board member of the
CAGP, and Dr. Dallas Seitz, geriatric psychiatrist at Queen's University.
The format will include:

sample short answer questions covering the broad array of topics in
geriatric psychiatry

critical appraisal of recent literature

reflection and discussion on broader areas of controversy

discussion of difficult cases posed by the faculty

group members' discussion of their own clinical challenges

group members' opportunity to ask questions they've "always-wanted-toknow-but-were-afraid-to-ask"
For the full list of schedule, topics and speakers please click here. The online
discussion group will be "asynchronous" which means that study group members and
faculty can log on and participate in the discussions at their convenience. Study group
members will also have access to recordings of the Banff lectures that can be viewed at
any time.
CAGP National Traineeship Strategy Initiatives. Two $500 bursaries will be
provided for senior residents/fellows to attend the "CAGP Review Course in Geriatric
Psychiatry" September 23-24, 2012 in Banff, AB. More details to follow.
Still in doubt? Then read the "Why Study With Us?" section on CAGP website will
help you decide.
