Dixie State University
Restructuring of Fine Arts Department
02/15/2014
Section I: Request
Dixie State University requests approval to restructure the Fine Arts Department. Currently, the School of
Visual and Performing Arts has two departments—Music and Fine Arts. Fine Arts houses three academic
disciplines, which are art, dance, and theatre. This proposal is to divide the Fine Arts Department into two
departments, the Department of Art and the Department of Theatre and Dance.
Section II: Need
The combination of three academic disciplines under one department chair has created a challenging
administrative load. With nearly 200 majors, the Art Program at DSU needs the administrative focus that
department status will bring. The new Department of Theatre and Dance will combine two disciplines that
have much in common. Southern Utah University and other institutions across the country make use of this
organizational structure. At DSU, theatre has a baccalaureate degree, but dance does not. The smaller
administrative unit will provide an environment for both of these programs to develop further.
Section III: Institutional Impact
It is anticipated that all three disciplines affected by this change will benefit in terms of the quality of student
experiences and, ultimately, in terms of enrollment. The campus at large will benefit from the voice of an
additional department chair in the governance process. This organizational change will not require facilities
or equipment support. Current clerical staff in the School of Visual and Performing Arts is sufficient to meet
the needs of the disciplines housed in it. The position of Chair of Fine Arts will become the Chair of Theatre
and Dance, so no additional resources will be required there. The current Art Program Director position will
be absorbed into the new Art Department Chair position, with some trade-off in costs to support the new
position.
Section IV: Finances
The net cost of the additional department chair will be $10,000 annually. It is anticipated that current
institutional resources will be sufficient to absorb this cost. No other programs will be impacted.
