Use of Assessment Results:
Based upon data acquired from Research, Planning, and Communication, 73 students
took the pre-test and 95 students took the post test. Based upon the data, students
met the effectiveness standard on only three of the twenty questions on the post-test.
On August 26, 2015, the Department Chair of Humanities, a full-time theatre faculty
member, and the Academic Assessment Specialist met to discuss the data on student
performance. Based upon the data, it was decided that a meeting consisting of faculty
teaching theatre will occur in mid October, 2015. This meeting will examine the current
issues of students not successfully mastering the designated student learning outcomes,
and address any other specific issues and deficits that are occurring in the discipline. It
was further decided that a full-time faculty member would be appointed in mid
September to research and present best practices in the mid October meeting.
Due to low performance, an additional meeting was scheduled with the Academic
Assessment Specialist, the current department chair, and the previous department chair
on September 3, 2015. Concern was expressed that all faculty were not using a master
syllabus and teaching a common curriculum. The previous department chair also was
concerned that a new textbook could have also attributed to the decline in student
learning outcome achievement. In an effort to address the low performance, the
previous department chair, who possesses a graduate degree in Speech, reviewed the
questions and the new textbook to determine if the new textbook attributed to the low
student performance. Based upon the data and the information acquired in the
meeting, it was decided that a comprehensive curriculum handbook would be created
for THEA 1030, which will provide information on assessment, student learning
outcomes, a master syllabus, sample activities that align with student learning
outcomes, commonly used assignments, and best practices. It was further decided that
all faculty teaching theatre would be required to read the new curriculum handbook,
and that all new adjuncts will be required to make two contacts with full time faculty
teaching Theater Appreciation. Due to low performance, it was decided that THEA
1030 would participate in the spring 2016 general education assessment to determine if
student learning outcome achievements improve based upon curriculum and
department changes. A time line is listed below:
Action Plan
Full-time faculty will create
a list of best practices that
will be incorporated in the
curriculum handbook
An adjunct is assigned to a
full-time faculty member
teaching theatre who will
keep adjunct informed of
course, department, and
college communication
Mandatory professional
development meeting
Create Curriculum
Handbook and be placed
online
Pre/Post Testing will be
scheduled for spring 2016
