Shipping Container Traffic Management Requirements Shipping Container A shipping container is a type of storage box and is usually used to import and export goods or short term storage. How long can I have a shipping container? A business or resident may have a shipping container, on the road outside their business or property, for up to two days. Any longer than 2 days will need to be negotiated with Council’s Traffic Engineer and, will only be approved in unavoidable circumstances. Where can I put a shipping container? Shipping containers are generally placed on the road, in front of a business or residential property. A shipping container cannot be placed; on a nature strip. less than 1.5 metres from the driveway. within 10 metres of an intersection or 20 metres if there are traffic signals. where it protrudes onto the footpath. where vehicle or pedestrian access is blocked. Reflector tape should be placed on the edge of the container at least 1.4 metres from the ground. Council will not be responsible for any damage or injury caused by the placement of a shipping container. Do I need to pay a fee to have a shipping container? There is currently no fee to have a shipping container on the road outside your business or property. Do I need approval for a shipping container? When a shipping container is placed on the road, outside your property, you need to obtain Council approval prior to accepting delivery. If a shipping container is located within your property boundary, Council approval is not required. How do I obtain approval for a shipping container? A Shipping Container Application for Approval Form will need to be completed and sent to Council five days prior to the estimated delivery date. A Council Traffic Engineer will process your application and, if all requirements are met, provide you with written approval.Should the size of the shipping container or the location it is to be placed changes, a new application is required. To obtain a copy of the ‘Shipping Container Application for Approval Form’ visit the Kingston website on www.kingston.vic.gov.au and follow the links or contact a Council Customer Service Officer on 1300 653 356. Note: An application form is not required each time a shipping container is delivered to your property if the size or its location does not change.
