WEMBLEY HIGH TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE Intervention Specialist Tutors These posts have been introduced to facilitate flexible and timely intervention across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 in the specific curriculum areas of English, mathematics, science, humanities and languages, and also in identified areas of need such as Speech and Language, Social, Emotional and Behavioural. These include students who require detailed and specialist knowledge in particular areas, and those who need particular help to overcome barriers to learning. In addition, the professional work of teachers will be complemented by taking responsibility for specific learning activities under an agreed system of supervision. This will involve planning, preparing, and delivering learning activities for individuals / groups or for a short term for classes, and monitoring students and assessing, recording, and reporting on students’ attainment and progress. JOB DESCRIPTION Purpose of post: To work as directed by the Leadership Group and Leader for Inclusion to implement: 1. Intervention within the Curriculum 2. Intervention with individuals / groups of students and to work within College Procedures and Policies. Intervention within the Curriculum • To provide the highest levels of student intervention either in English, mathematics, science, humanities or in a language • To plan and deliver structured and agreed learning intervention / teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to student needs • To implement intervention strategies in order to raise standards of achievement for all students, by utilising advanced levels of knowledge and skills when planning, monitoring, assessing and managing individuals / classes, and to encourage students to become more independent learners • To motivate and facilitate students’ learning/ progress by using clearly structured, interesting teaching and learning strategies • To develop and prepare resources for learning activities in accordance with lesson plans and in response to student need • To manage, monitor and evaluate the progress made by assigned students by using a range of assessment criteriaand where appropriate, modify methods to meet individual and/or group needs • To administer and assess tests, invigilate exams, undertake marking of students’ work, and accurately record achievement / progress • To manage the compilation of records, information, and data, and produce reports for analysis • To implement KS3 interventions and support students with their GCSE and A level work • To develop students’ competence and independence in the use of ICT • To complement the teachers’ delivery of the curriculum and • To actively seek and utilise a range of activities, courses, organisations and individuals to provide intervention for students to broaden and accelerate their learning and progress. Interventions for Students • To maximise student progress and attainment by setting targets and leading the drive for academic improvement • To plan and deliver lessons for individual students and groups of students in accordance with their specific needs • To evaluate student progress and to design as a matter of priority academic plans to address inadequate progress • To contribute to developing schemes of work, student work together with homework and ensuring that these are available on the R: Drive (staff and student) for the relevant Line Manager to quality check and update during the year as appropriate • To develop, select and maintain engaging resources to ensure excellence in the classroom • To monitor on a half-termly basis what is being achieved by students within a Subject Area • etc. To provide feedback to students in relation to progress, achievement, behaviour, attendance • To attend to students’ personal needs, and assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans / Behaviour Targets / Support Plans / strategies • To establish constructive relationships with students and interact with them according to individual needs. To encourage students to interact and work co-operatively with others, and engage in learning activities • To set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self – esteem and independence • To take a lead role in managing and delivering Pastoral support to students, and assist in their social, emotional and physical well-being • To develop and maintain a positive partnership with parents by telephone, letter, email, at Parents’ Evenings, information evenings, subject related evenings and at other appropriate College opportunities and • To contribute to/lead parental meetings to provide constructive feedback on student progress, achievement and behaviour, maintaining sensitivity and confidentiality at all times. College Procedures and Policies • To participate in whole school self- evaluation • To promote and support the inclusion of all students, including those with specific needs, both in learning activities, within and outside of the classroom • To supervise students in the absence of a teacher (Cover Supervisor) • To invigilate exams • To contribute to the overall ethos / work / aims of the College • To establish constructive relationships and communicate with external agencies / professionals, in liaison with the Leader for Inclusion, to support the achievement and progress of the students • To attend and participate in relevant meetings as required • To participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required • To be responsible for the provision of out of school hours learning activities (including those in the holidays), within guidelines established by the College • To use behaviour management strategies, in line with the College’s policy and procedures, to contribute to a purposeful learning environment and encourage students to interact and work cooperatively with others • To contribute to the College’s Pastoral Support Programme (e.g. supporting physical needs, student welfare, assist with social interaction, dealing with behaviour issues) and • To undertake any other duties required by the direct Line Manager, Deputy Headteacher or the Headteacher. Person Specification 1. Have a graduate degree (2:1 or above) with a specialism in any of the following: English, mathematics, science, humanities or a language. 2. Have knowledge of or interest in Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) TEFL. 3. Have a second language expertise (e.g. Arabic, Tamil, Polish, Gujarati). 4. Be proficient in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT. 5. Be adaptable and flexible taking into account the dynamic nature of WHTC. 6. Be capable of maintaining professional standards (in terms of punctuality, attendance, sensitivity, adaptability and aspiration) at all times. 7. Contribute positively to the Inclusion Team, Subject Team, Pastoral Team and whole College. 8. Have a positive outlook with a problem solving approach. Responsibilities Subject or department specialist intervention to: • provide strategic intervention for student(s) • plan and assess student(s) work • work to an examination specification • dedicate time and creativity to produce activities which help student(s) progress • collaborate effectively with subject teachers to have an impact on student progress • extend student provision by providing out of hours intervention. Specialist intervention to: • develop schemes of work for specific groups related to examinations • design and deliver intervention programmes to support students with specific needs • assess and monitor student progress. Pastoral, behaviour management or transition to: • deal with issues immediately • liaise with parents/carers and external agencies as directed • apply knowledge of students’ backgrounds and learning difficulties to maximise progress.
