CHS PTO Meeting
Minutes
March 5, 2012
CHS Library
7:00 to 8:00 PM
1. Welcome and Introductions
Thirteen people attended the March CHS PTO meeting: Lori Elliott,
Lisa Avery, Susan Ryffel, Stephen Rutherford, Sylvia Massad, KeKe
Walker, Kathleen Matheny, Louise Losos, Lily Raymond, Evelyn RicePeebles, Tina Wagner, Maitrayee Bhattacharyya, and Bodil
Hartmann.
2. Approval of Minutes
Minutes from the February 2012 meeting were approved. PTO
Meeting minutes are available on the CHS PTO website.
3. Treasurer’s Report
The current budget is available on the website. Bethany Sleckman is
reviewing the budget to correct some financial information that is
not correctly reflected in the hard copy distributed at the meeting.
Three Centennial Plaza brick orders have been received. Lisa Avery
recommended that Susan Ryffel add the CHS PTO Tax ID number to
acknowledgement letters for the bricks.
4. Youth For Understanding (YFO)
Stephen Rutherford from Youth For Understanding made a
presentation to the PTO Board explaining the YFU exchange student
program. More information about the program is available at
www.yfu.org, or by calling (636) 812-2338. Clayton High School has
capacity for three exchange students. Marci Boland, a teacher at the
high school, has hosted a student in the past and would be happy to
talk about the experience with anyone interest in being a host family.
5. Principal’s Report
Louise Losos reported that they are currently interviewing to replace
three high school retirees. Jazz Band, Show Choir and Stugo recently
hosted the Senior Swing which is an event designed to bring students
and senior citizens together for fun, music and dancing. Jazz at the
Sheldon has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 13th. The Arts
Fair, in partnership with Special School District, will be on April 5th.
Vietnam Day, a sophomore class event, is scheduled for March 15th.
Spring sports have begun. Lisa Avery asked about the rough
condition of Upper Gay Field. Louise will follow up with the
appropriate parties to understand if any improvements can be made
that will reduce injuries to teams who are using the field.
6. Parent Connections
Kathleen Matheny reported that the recent senior class parent event
at Barristers in Clayton was a great success with forty to forty-five
RSVPs, but nearly eighty attendees. The event generated $360 in
graduation ticket raffle sales. The committee advertised using email,
evites, and phone blasts. Bodil mentioned that the freshman class
committee is considering a cocktail party, similar to the one at
Barristers. Lisa Avery asked her to please review any possible dates
with Patti Paster. Lisa also reported that Pam Schindler will be
coordinating the Go!St. Louis Marathon. She is looking for additional
support through the Service Club at CHS for students looking for
service hours. The event is on Sunday, April 15th, and involves
manning a water station at the corner of Forsythe and Central. Lisa
also reported that the PTO will be sponsoring a screening of the
movie ìTwo Million Minutesî, a counter-point to the movie ìRace to
Nowhereî. There will be a discussion session after the movie. Louise
Losos mentioned that the School Climate Survey might provide date
about students’ feelings toward homework. Lily Raymond offered to
review the data and see how it might support the discussion.
7. After Prom Update
Lori Elliott reported for Michelle Harris that the committee continues
to look for financial donations for giveaways, and to support After
Prom. Mike Nelke should be contacted to confirm the Prom theme.
The Principal’s Newsletter will include an offer of Prom ticket
scholarships for students who would otherwise be unable to attend.
The graduation seat raffle has produced enough money to offer ten
$50 scholarships. The Junior and Senior counselors will manage
them. Louise asked about sending one last letter to senior class
parents asking for Funds For Excellence donations, and Centennial
Plaza brick orders.
8. Senior Graduation Seat Update
The Silent Auction raised $725. A raffle is on going, $360 was raised
at the senior parent connections event, and raffle tickets will be on
sale during lunch April 2 – 6. The winner will be announced on April
10th. Proceeds from the raffle are being split with the senior class.
9. Clayton Go Green 5K
Lori Elliott reported that registration has begun. The race in on May
6th, and starts and ends at Gay Field.
10.Adjournment
The meeting adjourned at 8:20. The next meeting will be 7:00, April
2nd, 2012 in the CHS Library. All are welcome!
