b. School Board/Construction Update:
Project Manager from Illig (Marty) came to speak with 4 other project managers in charge
of different stages of the project. Renovation talk began in October 2012. This week has
been slow do to mostly cleaning out the sanctuary. There are 2 phases: (1) remodel, (2)
elevator outdoor eating area. Since the building was originally constructed in the 50’s
there will be a lot of changes to original materials used, as well as abatement. Safety is
first! Rich (Safety), Tom with (H2) does sampling of environmental and can stop the
project at any time if they find any impacts to safety, of not only the students, and
families, but also to the employees working on the renovations. Tommy is in charge of all
demo. Troy the super will be here every day and is available for any questions brought
up by the parents. Demolition will start next week.
During the abatement, Tony’s guys will be suited up for their own protection since they
are working in a confined area. We understand parents will be concerned during this
time, but we want to assure everyone that all hazardous materials are being contained.
The two areas with asbestos are the roof and the floor. They will use sprayers and other
measures to minimize dust. They are thinking to demo the roof during Thanksgiving since
the school will be closed. During demolition of the roof, they will continually test the
playground area and monitor air quality the entire time so that the air is 100% safe. Tony
will shut them down at any time the air sample is not acceptable. OSHA will oversee the
safety of the work. HUD will oversee the safety of the kids.
This company has experience with Chandler, St. Anthony’s, et others.
FAQ’s to be sent out to parents soon will contact information for all future questions.
