Unit #: ___7_____ Subject(s): ___Science___________________ Grade(s): ___5___ Designer(s): Sarah Jones, Amanda Dyer, Kimberly Kopp STAGE 1 – DESIRED RESULTS Unit Title: _______Evolution and Genetics____________________________________________ Understandings: Students will understand that… Traits are passed from parents to offspring creating unique individuals. Some traits give an organism advantage in survival and reproduction. Environment and heredity play a role in making a person who they are. Essential Questions: How are organisms of the same kind similar, yet different? How do differences within organisms of the same kind help them to survive? What do genes do? How are inherited traits different from learned behaviors? Students will know: The life processes and characteristics of species that define a population will be transmitted from parent to offspring. These processes and characteristics cover a broad range of structures, functions, and behaviors that can vary substantially from individual to individual. Some likenesses between parents and children are inherited. Other likenesses are learned from parents or within the community (population/culture). In order for offspring to resemble their parents there must be a reliable way to transfer genetic information from parent to offspring. Key Vocabulary Terms: trait, inherit, organisms, genes Students will be able to: Analyze the life processes that are transmitted from parent to offspring within a population. Discuss multiple structures, functions, and behaviors that vary from one individual to the next. Compare and contrast learned and inherited traits. List and describe the traits that offspring inherit from their parents. 5.L.3 STAGE 1– Standards Understand why organisms differ from or are similar to their parents based on the characteristics of the organism. 5.L.3.1 Explain why organisms differ from or are similar to their parents based on the characteristics of the organism. 5.L.3.2 Give examples of likenesses that are inherited and some that are not. 5.TT.1 Use technology tools and skills to reinforce and extend classroom concepts and activities. 5.SI.1 Apply criteria to determine appropriate information resources for specific topics and purposes.
