J O B D E S C R I P T I O N JOB TITLE: Industrial Engineer DEPARTMENT: Engineering REPORTS TO: Director of Engineering BASIC FUNCTION: The Industrial Engineer is responsible for the continuous improvement of plant operations through implementation of projects and processes to increase productivity, quality, and reliability. The position will use statistical tools to define, measure, analyze, improve, and control plant processes and systems. The Engineer will understand and improve all aspects of manufacturing including people, machines, materials, methods, environment, and measurements. The Industrial Engineer will also provide cross-functional support to other engineering disciplines, including project management, project engineering, and maintenance. SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING 1. Efficiency/productivity analysis 2. Supply chain flow and process capacity analysis 3. Cost/benefit analysis for new project proposals 4. Labor budget preparation and tracking responsibilities 5. Engineering representative for Chattem energy management activities 6. Labor standards development 7. Management of capital projects 8. Cross-functional support of other engineering disciplines CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT: 1. Develop meaningful and measureable Key Performance Indicators. 2. Develop processes and systems to measure and track KPI’s 3. Utilize the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) and other processes to identify and changeover tasks from mechanics to equipment operators. 4. Develop and implement continuous improvement concepts to transfer basic maintenance and changeover tasks from mechanics to equipment operators. 5. Support the Sanofi Lean initiative. 6. Work with the Maintenance department to resolve equipment performance and reliability issues. 7. Serve as a technical resource for troubleshooting and resolving complex equipment issues. PAGE 1 of 2 8. Work with the Safety Manager to improve ergonomics, unsafe actions, and unsafe conditions. DUTIES: 1. Analyze production methods and equipment used in manufacturing, make recommendations for improving productivity, and coordinate implementation. 2. Analyze the product supply chain and make recommendations for improving flow of materials, increasing manufacturing capacity, and reducing in-process inventories. 3. Assist Engineering, Maintenance, and Packaging Operations in the optimization of changeover activities. 4. Develop engineered methods, standards, and capacity impact for new product proposals. 5. Make capital investment recommendations and purchase equipment and change parts as needed. 6. Calculate cost benefits and internal rate of returns for new project proposals. 7. Perform routine activities in support of budget preparation, including calculation of labor rates, and monitor actual versus standard costs throughout the year. 8. Track and maintain plant utilities and serve as the primary Chattem representative for energy conservation initiatives. 9. Manage segments of the engineering and maintenance budgets as deemed appropriate. 10. Update and maintain company AutoCAD drawings and provide CAD support for other departments as required. 11. Contractors PAGE 2 of 2 QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Management or closely related field with 0-2 years of experience in Experience in the OTC pharmaceuticals or food and beverage industries preferred. Experience using Six Sigma or similar processes for solving problems. Ability to work with employees of all skill and experience. PAGE 3 of 2
