ALGEBRA II
Mrs. deTreville
Welcome to Algebra II, Honors Algebra II and Engineering Math II
Students enrolled in Algebra II are expected to have mastered those concepts
outlined in the Algebra 1 standards of learning. In this course we will cover all
the SOL requirements set forth by the Department of Education for Algebra II. In
order to accomplish this before the SOL test is administered in May we must
move at a rapid pace. If you have a strong background in math you should have
no problems. If your math skills are weak you can still be successful provided
you are willing to work hard.
weak math skills + LAZINESS = failure
Failure is not an option, especially if all it
takes to succeed is a little more effort!!
Every student is expected to:
- come to class prepared and on time
- do every assignment to the best of his/her ability
- check and correct your homework everyday
- study for every test and quiz by doing problems
- pay attention and take good notes everyday
- keep an orderly binder with every paper dated and in the proper place
- seek additional help when you don’t understand something
- take advantage of any and all opportunities to improve his/her grade
- have a positive attitude
- follow all classroom and school rules
- learn from mistakes
- be in their seat working on the warm-up when the bell rings (if not you will be
marked tardy)
- Make up missed work. You have the number of days absent plus one to make
up any missed work. When you return from an absence you are expected to
have the assignment that was due the day you were absent. Check the
assignment calendar when you are absent. There may be notes and you will
find the assignment there.
Classroom Rules
It is imperative that students adhere to classroom and school rules. Discipline
problems in the classroom hinder the teaching and learning process. If you are
disruptive you are taking away from others. Please don’t be selfish. Think about
how your actions affect everyone not just yourself. Classroom rules as set forth
by HSHS are posted in the classroom.
Supplies
-Writing utensils. I prefer you use pencil.
-3-ring binder. You must have a 3 ring binder with three dividers.
-Composition notebook. 70 or 100 sheet composition notebook. NOT spiral.
(I will provide you with a composition book.)
-Laptop. You are expected to have your laptop every day. Hard copies of
assignments will only be given to students whose laptop is at the help
desk.
Textbooks
Textbooks are available but because we are using handouts and on-line
resources, we will not be issuing a textbook to students in this class. Textbooks
are available to students upon request. There will also be a link to textbook
resources on my website (mrsdet.net). If a student is issued a book it will be
his/her responsibility to return it at the end of the year. Failure to do so will
result in a fee which must be paid prior to graduation.
Technology Usage
Students are expected to bring their laptop to class every day. If your laptop is
broken you must take it to the help desk as soon as possible. All Highland
Springs High School students are prohibited by school policy to use any type of
unauthorized electronic or mechanical device during regular school hours. Any
student found to be using any unauthorized electronic device will have the device
confiscated in accordance with the appropriate provisions of the Code of Student
Conduct and given to the student's grade level administrator. Please be aware:
If a student is using any unauthorized electronic device during a graded
assignment that device will be confiscated and the student will receive a zero on
the assignment.
Grading Policy
Tests/Project: 50%
Quizzes/Classwork: 30%
Homework: 20%
Tests
Tests count as the majority of your grade. My goal is for you to learn and
understand the material presented to you. If you do poorly on a test you can get
rebate points.
Quizzes
Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Binder checks and composition
book checks will count as quiz/classwork grades.
Classwork
Classwork is work done in class or at home and is graded for correctness. Some
warm-ups will be graded as classwork. You may use your notes/book and other
resources for some classwork assignments.
Homework
Homework will be graded on completeness not correctness. If you do it all,
whether it is right or wrong, you will get 100. If you do less than half you will get
a zero.
***If you only have answers when there was work to be shown you will get no
more than a 50.
***Homework must be in the homework section of your binder or on your desk
by the time I come to your seat to check it or you will lose 10 points.
***If your homework is not in your binder and you cannot find it by the time I
finish checking you will receive a zero (even if you find it later).
Your lowest homework grade will be dropped at the end of each nine weeks. If
your homework average is an A at the end of the 9 weeks I will drop the lowest
quiz/classwork grade.
Opportunities to Improve Your Grade
1. You can earn 10 extra points on most homework assignments if you
complete the assignment the night it is assigned and show it to me the
next day. For 1st and 3rd Monday classes you will have to complete it and
show it to me before the end of the day.
2. You can earn points back, rebate points, (usually ½ credit) on tests if you
come to tutoring to go over the problems you got wrong and then do
similar problems to get points back. The rebate problems will be the same
type that you missed but they might not be multiple choice. You must do
this within 1 weeks of getting the test back. You may not get rebate
points the last week of the marking period.
3. If you get a 50 or below on a homework assignment you can come to
tutoring within a week to do it. It will then be graded on correctness. (It is
much, much better to do your homework on time!!) You can only do this
once every nine weeks. You cannot do this if the assignment was to be
turned in and graded for correctness.
4. Maintain a homework average of A so your lowest quiz grade will be
dropped at the end of each marking period.
5. Make up your work when you are absent. You have the number of days
absent plus one to make up any work. I usually give you longer to make
up a test or quiz but the longer you put it off the less you will remember.
When you return you are expected to have the assignment that was due
the day you were absent. Check the assignment calendar when you are
absent. There may be notes and you will find the assignment there. ***If
you are absent and you come to the next class with the assignment from
the day you were absent completed you will get 10 extra points on it. This
is to reward you for being responsible and taking the initiative to find out
and learn what you missed.
Extra Help
I understand that math can be difficult for some but don’t use that as an excuse
to fail. If you know math is difficult for you then you will just have to work a little
harder. “Be hard on yourself and life will be easy on you. Be easy on yourself
and life will be hard on you.” I will be available for tutoring after school on
Tuesday and Thursday. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not put off getting extra
help.
Please note that I give you ample opportunities to keep your grade up therefore
I do not give extra credit. If you do what you are supposed to do, when you are
supposed to do it and in the manner in which you were instructed to do it you
won’t need extra credit.
Daily Classroom Procedures
1. Quietly enter the room, get your calculator, and read the board to see if
you need to get anything before you go to your seat.
2. Go to your seat and take your homework out and start working on the
warm-up. You must be in your seat and working on the warm-up by the
time the tardy bell rings. If you are not in your seat when the tardy bell
rings you will be marked tardy.
3. While you work on the warm-up I will check for homework. It should be
on your desk or your binder should be opened to the assignment. I will
not wait for you to find it.
4. Go over warm-up.
5. Go over homework. You should correct your homework.
6. New lesson/activity/test or quiz.
7. Work on assignment.
8. Remain in your seat until the bell rings.
Always remember and don’t ever forget……
HARD WORK PAYS OFF!!!
I have read Mrs. deTreville’s syllabus and understand her expectations of me. I am aware
of her classroom rules and procedures as well as the opportunities I have to improve my
grade. I agree to adhere to the school and classroom rules. I realize that my grade is my
responsibility and if I am doing poorly I need to take measures to correct that.
