Mr. Donnell – 6th Grade Math
Class Overview:
This course is designed for students to enhance their foundation skills needed for success in their current MJI class. Math standards to
be covered this year range from ratios and proportional relationships, The Number System, expressions and equations, geometry and
statistics.
Course Materials:
1. Pencils – please bring pencils DAILY to class.
2. Loose-Leaf Notebook Paper (wide-ruled or college-ruled; student choice.)
3. 1 ½ Inch A-Day/B-Day Binder
4. Warm-up Composition Book
Classroom Procedures:
In order to provide an effective learning environment, good classroom behavior is essential. Each student is responsible for his or her
behavior. CHAMPs rituals and procedures will be implemented in the classroom.
Students will:
1. BE RESPONSIBLE: By being on time, prepared for class, remaining on task and keeping each student’s personal
work area clean.
2. BE RESPECTFUL: No talking without permission, refraining from negative talk between students and with teacher,
staying in assigned seat, and at the end of class, waiting to be dismissed by the teacher.
3. ABIDE: By NOT bringing gum, candy, food, cards, dice, hats, etc. to class. Book bags shall be kept in the student’s locker during
the school day. It is the student’s responsibility to follow the rules included in the student code of conduct.
Class Requirements:
1. Bring Digits Textbook, Binder, Pencil, and reading book DAILY. Students may leave Digits book in Mr. Donnell’s class if
desired.
1. Any free time in class, students will be required to read their SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) book.
2. Students will keep a folder. In the folder will be a Table of Contents, Classwork, Notes and any paper homework.
3. Students will write daily warm-ups in their Composition Book which will remain in class.
4. Quizzes/Tests: These are given on an as needed basis and can be announced or unannounced, also assessments may be
paper and pencil or online.
5. Classwork/Homework: There will be classwork daily and homework will be based on student needs. The majority of
homework will be done through the Digits website. If no homework is assigned students may review notes, review prior or
upcoming work, or read their SSR Book.
Parents/Guardians can help students by:
1. Setting aside a specific time and area for your child to work or study.
2. Assist your child with his/her homework – check the class homepage for additional resources.
3. Review your child’s homework. Ask questions, go over notes and vocabulary.
Grade Criteria:
Student success will be determined by the following criteria:
 Warm-up Notebooks 10% - Checked periodically throughout semester.
 Classwork 20% - Always correctable and easy to gain points!!!
 Homework 20%
 Test/Quizzes 50%
*****Assignments that are handed in late will be accepted but the grade will be automatically reduced by 10% for each day late unless
there are circumstances explained to the teacher for the late assignment. If late assignments continue to be a problem a parent phone
call will follow.*****
CLASSWORK AND HOMEWORK RUBRIC
To receive Full Credit:
Student must show complete understanding of the assignment and must demonstrate the steps involved in solving the problem(s). The
assignment must be fully completed with 90 to 100 percent of the questions being correct. The student must be able to articulate the
understanding of the assignment and be able to explain his/her work to someone else.
To receive Partial Credit:
Student must demonstrate a good understanding of the assignment. The assignment is fully completed with at least 70 percent of the
problem(s) correct. The student must be able to demonstrate the steps involved in solving the problem.
No Credit:
Student does not attempt to complete the assignment; therefore no evidence is provided for review or grading.
** If a student misses a day from class, it is his/her responsibility to see me the day he/she returns to class to obtain information regarding
assignments missed. To make-up a missed quiz or test, students have the same number of days he/she missed school to make up the
quiz or test. **
Grading Scale
90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
60-69 = D
Below 60 = F
Read and discuss this information with your parents/guardians. Sign (both student and parent/guardian) and return to class tomorrow to receive an
A on your first homework assignment.
