Town Hall. Those in attendance were:
Josh Wyatt, Mayor
Ellen Wyatt
Robert Thompson, Jr.
Gwen Fisher
AUGUST 5th, 2014
Mayor Wyatt began the meeting at 7:01 p.m.
Council member reviewed financial reports.
Mayor Wyatt stated that he would like to do a clean-up day before Down Home Day. Ellen Wyatt asked
which was better, Saturday September 13th or 20th. Gwen Fisher said that she thinks that the 20th would
be better since it is closer to Down Home Day. Mayor Wyatt said that clean-up day is set for Saturday,
September 20th at 8-12.
Mayor Wyatt said that our sidewalks, which is part of the Tillotson Grant, are nearing completion. They
are in front of Lucky’s now and will finish up at Lyerly Dam Road.
Mayor Wyatt also said that we will need to set the millage rate next month. We are still waiting on the
digest numbers from the board of assessors. They said as soon as they are ready they will get them to
us. Mayor Wyatt said that we will probably just look at keeping the millage rate the same as last year,
which is 10.24.
Mayor Wyatt then said that on the Recreational Trails Grant, he met with Chattooga Tank and Pipe, they
are making the holding tanks for the restrooms now and as soon as they get those completed and
delivered, we will start work on the sights.
Mayor Wyatt said that we received a letter from the library. The board of trustees has a representative
that serves representing Lyerly and it has been Joyce Brown. The letter said that she has missed three
consecutive meetings and that we need to appoint a new representative. Joyce Brown’s term will expire
in June of 2015 and they want someone to fill it until then. There next meeting is October 28th, 2014 and
they want us to have someone appointed by then. This will be a volunteer basis and they will meet
quarterly. Gwen Fisher said that she would do it as long as she could do it and be on the council.
Mayor Wyatt added that right now, our water system, when we pump raw water from the ground, we
add chlorine and fluoride to it. There is starting to be a shirt toward getting fluoride out of the water.
Some studies have shown that it is not as beneficial as they thought it would be. The reason it was put
into the water was to strengthen people teeth but now they think that the risk may outweigh the
benefits. At one time, if you were adding fluoride to your water, you could never stop. Now, they have
changed the law and if we get 10% of the registered voters to sign a petition to quit adding fluoride to
the water then we can put it on the ballot for the next election. It would just be a question on the ballot,
Do you want fluoride in the water, Yes or No? Mayor Wyatt said that it would save the Town some
money, water wise. Right now we spend between 2 and 3 thousand dollars a year on fluoride and we
also have to do an extra round of testing and postage for that. If we did not have it, we could probably
save around 4 thousand dollars a year. Mayor Wyatt also said that a lot of the buildup in your faucets is
from fluoride. Mayor Wyatt said that the council can think about it and decide if they want to do a
petition.
There being no further business or discussion, the meeting ended at 7:22 p.m.
