5JK Class Newsletter Term 2 2013 A MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENTS Our HSIE and Visual Arts topic this term was a cultural study of Japan and its people. Here are some of the students’ comments for you to read. * “I liked it when we filmed the atomic bomb news report because you could work with friends and have fun.” Remy Ngo A MESSAGE FROM MISS BUSHBY AND MRS KYRIACOU Welcome to the 5JK newsletter for Term 2! This term we have been fortunate to have Miss Marfleet join us. She is a pre-service teacher from the University of Notre Dame. Miss Marfleet has been teaching some lessons this term as well as working with small groups. We would like to thank Miss Marfleet for all her assistance this term. It has been greatly appreciated! This term 5JK have been learning a great deal. Here are some of the topics we have been learning about: LITERACY: We have been learning about persuasive techniques used by advertisers. The students created impressive print advertisements and even television commercials. MATHS: We have been using online games and activities to assist the students in learning various mathematical concepts. Ms Batten and Mrs Macmillan have been teaching the students various strategies to assist them in solving mathematical problems. SCIENCE: We have been learning about various weather phenomena as well as conducting experiments to learn more about weather. * “What I loved learning about is the book Hiroshima because it was sad and interesting. I also loved when Mrs Kyriacou taught us about the cherry blossoms and their colours.” Chantelle Trinh * “I liked it when I made the origami. I also liked learning about the atomic bomb. I didn’t know how dangerous it was.” Ricky Lim * “I liked learning about Japanese Art. I also liked learning about Japan.” Teba Alnashi * “I liked it when we did Art about Japan because we could use paint, glue and other equipment as well.” Dawson Loung REMINDER – TERM 4 CAMP: Bathurst 22nd, 23rd, 24th October 2013 (WEEK 3). OUR WORK As part of our Writing unit this term we learnt about persuasive texts. We analysed the techniques advertisers use to sell products. Impressive print advertisements were created by the students.
