Fairhope High School 9th grade Summer Reading List, 2015-2016 The belief that readers need to practice reading underscores the independent reading program at Fairhope High School. Improved reading skills will increase students’ scores on standardized tests. The program also encourages students to read for pleasure and enrichment, exploring worlds and perspectives beyond their everyday lives. The summer reading list and required reading guide(s) will be available on the school’s website after May 11th. New students are responsible for completing the summer reading and related assignments. Reading and/or note-taking guides are to be completed in conjunction with the summer reading. Please pay careful attention to the grade level and diploma level for the guide, as they differ by grade, level, and book. * indicates a book from the county-approved supplemental reading list 9th regular: 1 required *Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher 9th grade Pre AP: 2 short stories REQUIRED *”The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe http://www.public.asu.edu/~cajsa/eng200_fall07/The%20Masque%20of%20the%20Red%20Death.pdf *”The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson https://sites.middlebury.edu/individualandthesociety/files/2010/09/jackson_lottery.pdf Then CHOOSE ONE of the following nonfiction essays as a pairing to the novel: “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass http://www.pasadena.edu/files/syllabi/dlbronstein_29682.pdf "Once More to the Lake" by E.B.
