Read p. 39-40- large group, draw popsicles sticks, ask comprehension question after each paragraph 4. Start Map of Egypt- project map on board (add compass Rose, Nile River, Sahara desert, map title, Upper Egypt, Lower Egypt, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea) with a pen 5. Pyramid Magazine- Read about Nile River, mummies, Egypt’s culture Assignment: Color map of Egypt Lesson 2- October 4 Chapter 2 Section 1 Topic: The Nile Valley- River People, hieroglyphics Big Ideas: 1. What did the Egyptians make that we use today? What did they use to make it? 2. What were hieroglyphics? 3. How did the Egyptians harvest grain? Questions to Research from Lesson 1: 1. Why did the Egyptians shave their children’s heads? 2. What did they use to shave their heads? 3. When did they become adults? 1. Prepare: Write on board Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 big ideas 2. Check to see if everyone colored their map. Do not collect. 3. Post Big Ideas- Review by asking them to answer Lesson 1 Big Ideas, Post Lesson 2 Big Ideas 4. Add Vocabulary Terms to Social Studies Notebook, Write words on board (papyrus, hieroglyphics), each student writes definitions in their notebook, they draw a picture that goes with the word and definition for the four words we have had for Chapter 2, and we discuss it once they are done 5. Read p. 41-42 Large Group- Fill out ART worksheet before, during, and after reading 6. From Farming to Food Activity- Each students gets a paper with one of the steps. They draw what their paper describes. Assignment: Make Egyptian Cartouche- student’s name in hieroglyphics on a white sheet of typing paper- Print Egyptian Alphabet Lesson 3- October 9 Chapter 2 Section 1 Topic: The Nile Valley- Government, Social classes, family life Big Ideas 1. Why did they need a government? 2. What was Egypt’s social class? 3. What was the family life like? 1. Read 43-46, Students fill out Egyptian Worksheet (I created) as we read. 4. Draw triangle in notebook- social classes p. 45 Do this on board with printed pictures for each social class 5. Section 1 Activity- Act out the Egypt map/ Nile River, In groups of two or three students will explain the importance and write it on the back of the paper given to them, Students will be called in a certain order to create the map of Egypt and say the importance. 6.
