I have reflected on every decision and analyzed my solutions and ideas. It has been challenging, busy, exciting and a time of great learning and growth for me. I have learned as much about myself as a person, educator, leader, manager and visionary as I have about our amazing staff members, students, parents and community members. We should all be very proud of what we have accomplished this year. Every student, staff member, and parent has worked tirelessly to make sure that our time has been a success. As everyone settles into summer, don’t forget that the single most important thing any child can do to stay academically engaged is to read. Research shows that students can avoid an academic slide by simply reading. Additionally, look for authentic learning opportunities available in everyday life that will reinforce skills and concepts taught in school. On behalf of our Cedarmere staff, thank you for sharing your children with us again this school year. I wish everyone a happy, safe, and restful summer. Fondly, Laurie Brown IMPORTANT UPDATES! In an effort to improve our bus transportation, the Office of Transportation has asked that we slightly change our school hours for next year. Old Hours New Hours 8:20 First Morning Bell 8:15 First Morning Bell 8:35 Late Bell/ Learning Day Begins 8:30 Late Bell/Learning Day Begins 3:00 First Afternoon Bell 2:55 First Afternoon Bell 3:05 Dismissal Begins 3:00 Dismissal Begins As you can see, the day will start and end five minutes earlier next year. Thank you in advance for taking note of these time changes. The safety of our students is always foremost in our minds. Baltimore County has implemented security measures in all of our schools to ensure a safe learning environment. To this end, we have found it necessary to reconsider our traditional First Day of School Celebration. While our First Day Celebration was a wonderful event, it did pose some security risks; risks with which we are no longer comfortable. Therefore, in lieu of this event, we will be hosting a “Meet the Teacher/Back to School Night” on Monday, August 25th a few days before school officially begins. During this event, you and your child will have the opportunity to meet the teacher and the other students and parents in your child’s class as well as learn about the upcoming year’s curriculum. Also, the PTA will be present to register new members. As we are still in the planning stages, more details about this event will be sent home this summer via Robo calls, emails, School and PTA website postings, and letters. As always, we appreciate your support and involvement in our school and look forward to seeing you at “Meet the Teacher/ Back to School Night” on August 25th, PLEASE SAVE THE DATE. Grades 1-5 Homeroom assignments for the 2014-2015 school year will be included in the students’ report card envelopes. We will also include supply lists and transportation information. Therefore, there will not be a summer mailing. NEW BEGINNINGS Next year, some of our valued staff members will begin a new chapter in their professional career. Therefore, we will be saying goodbye to some of our staff members who have made a tremendous impact on our students. After a two year tenure as our amazing Assistant Principal at Cedarmere, we will be saying goodbye to Mrs. Arlene Moore. She has accepted a Principal position with Carroll County Public Schools. We know that she will be a great leader! Mrs. Jill Salabes (SLP) and Sandy Bittner(Cafeteria Manager) have decided to retire at the end of this school year. Mrs. Salabas has been with BCPS for 33 years, and Mrs. Bittner for 27 years. We wish them the very best in their retirement! Mrs. Paula Krueger (kindergarten five years), Ms. Heather Mills (grade 1 five years), and Mr. Jeff Loyd (P.E. eight years) will be moving to the new Mays Chapel Elementary School. We wish them the very best as they help open the new school. Dr. Chloe Cummings (ESOL two years) will be leaving us, as well. We wish all of these valued staff members well as they embark on exciting new journeys in their lives. We will be welcoming some new and outstanding members to our Cedarmere staff. Registration hours will be 11:30 to 2:30. 5TH GRADE TRANSITION YEAR RESIDENCY VERIFICATION All resident families with students currently enrolled in grades 5 or 8 are now required to verify residency with their sending school (Cedarmere Elementary School) prior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year. Letters were mailed out to the parents/guardians of our 5th grade students. Failure to provide this information will result in the receiving school (the students’ projected Middle School) withdrawing the student prior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year, as indicated in Baltimore County Public School Policy Rule 5150. SHARED DOMICILE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS Shared Domicile Renewal Forms were sent to the homes of all families residing with another family. Your child’s enrollment must be renewed each year as long as you live in a shared domicile living arrangement. If you received a form and are no longer living in a shared domicile living arrangement, proof of residency must be provided for your new address. If you have any questions about the documentation you need to provide, please call Mrs. Knefel at 410-887-1100.
