GEZE solutions in the healthcare sector - competence in door, window and safety
technology
The international convention HOSPITAL BUILD EUROPE 2011 finished one day before
World Health Day. Besides trends and perspectives in the European hospital market, the key
topics of hospital construction, design and evaluation were also on the agenda. GEZE
presented innovative automatic swing and sliding door systems.
The GEZE range of products specially for door, window and safety technologies in hospitals
and care institutions is extensive, as the requirements placed on doors and windows in
foyers, hallways and main thoroughfares, in care and intensive care wards right up to
operating theatres and laboratories are numerous: comfort, versatility, safety, economy, and
a design that contributes to creating a pleasant atmosphere all stand at the forefront. GEZE
offers individual, customised solutions, tailored to suit the specific function; be it as part of a
new building or a refurbishment. All specific criteria in healthcare are taken into account:
barrier-free access, hygiene standards, preventative fire protection, the conflicting safety
functions of a door in emergency exit routes, and the applicable laws and directives.
An inviting atmosphere
Large and prestigious hospital entrances are becoming more and more like hotel lobbies.
Automatic linear or circular sliding doors with Slimdrive SL NT-FR or SC/SC-FR drive
variants are the ideal solution in barrier-free transparent porches, which form part of the
emergency exit route. The slimline drives are just seven centimetres tall and are subtly
integrated into sophisticated glass facades.

Open sesame! - Barrier-free access at the touch of a button
Doors in foyers or internal facades, e.g. as regularly frequented entrances to gardens or
care stations, are made barrier-free with swing door drives, e.g. the quiet Slimdrive EMD.
They open, prompted by a movement sensor, button or mobile radio-controlled operation.
Making fresh air supplies barrier-free is also not a problem: skylight wings to provide cross
ventilation above hallways can be fitted with electronic operation. When connected to the
central building control system, mechanical ventilation can be achieved, for example when a
specific concentration of carbon dioxide is reached.

Patients' rooms are always fitted with free-moving doors - ideally without door closers,
wherever the fire protection concept allows. In order to achieve a secure closing of the doors,
for example in cases where they must always be kept shut, or where they are to be closed
during a fire, "Freeswing" door closers, e.g. the TS 5000 EFS, are the best solution. This
function means that, once the door has been opened initially, e.g. in the morning, it is
possible to pass through the door without any resistance in either the opening or closing
direction of the door.
The swing door drive ECturn allows the doors to wards and rooms accommodating the
elderly to be easily automated. For maximum user convenience, "ECturn doors" can also be
operated wirelessly via mobile radio-operated remote controls. This reduces the work of care
workers. They are becoming more and more standard in everyday barrier-free life.

Door comfort and safety in sanitary areas
Toilets and sanitary areas require barrier-free, secure doors, which prevent access from
outside when the toilet or bath is in use, particularly in the case of people with limited
mobility. TSA 160-NT swing door drives with toilet control allow this. They are operated by a
large button. One push of the button activates the "Occupied" light and the door is closed.
The door can be opened from outside in the case of an emergency. Manual Perlan 140
sliding door systems are recommended in most small bathrooms. The door leaves slowly
come together and prevent body parts or objects becoming trapped. The automated Perlan
AUT-NT solution is used in comfort rooms.
It is common practice for two patients' rooms to be joined by a bathroom, and in many cases
the doors are controlled by Perlan AUT-NT drives. If the bathroom is entered from one side,
then the door on the other side locks and an illuminated display is activated.

Hygiene and controlled access to the most sensitive areas
Operating theatres, intensive care wards and laboratories are amongst the most
sensitive areas in a hospital. Hygiene and adherence to the applicable regulations are of the
utmost importance. The Powerdrive HT sliding door system is an impenetrably sealed
automatic solution for operating theatre doors that need to open quickly. The Powerdrive
operating theatre sliding door system is also used in intensive care wards and offers high
levels of user convenience. It makes sense to connect it with an access control system so
that the door can only be used by authorised persons. In the intensive care unit itself, the use
of sliding or swing door leaves from integrated glass elements is not just for purely aesthetic
reasons - they mean that the entire glass surface can be cleaned without issue.

A great climate - with safety
A pleasant ambient climate and clean air contribute to creating the atmosphere and hygiene
that is expected in hospitals. The opening and closing of windows for everyday ventilation is
performed by window drive systems. Here the ventilation is closely linked to preventative fire
protection: In the case of fire, the spread of smoke in the emergency escape routes must be
prevented to as great a degree as possible. This is the only way to allow people to reach the
safe zones as quickly as possible. Smoke and heat extraction systems (RWA) from GEZE
have a dual function: daily ventilation and the extraction of smoke in the case of fire.
Windows, light domes, overhead lights and smoke dampers are opened or closed by
electronic drives. The barrier-free ventilation is operated via buttons and radio-operated
remote controls. Timer switches or rain and wind controls can also be connected. In the case
of an alarm, the ventilation can be activated either manually using RWA buttons or
automatically via smoke alarms.
