¡Bienvenidos a la clase de AP
Español Lenguaje y Cultura!
Tarea del verano1
I am really excited to be working with you again next year! By signing up for this class you have signed
up for a lot of work which requires your consistent time, energy and commitment. Your participation
and dedication is essential not only for your own success but also for the success of your classmates. In
this class, we learn from each other. I will be asking a lot from you and I will expect your best work
(whatever than turns out to be). You should expect to feel frustrated and in-over-your-head at times.
This means I am doing my job! In return, I offer you my time and dedication. You are all important to
me and I will be there in whatever way you need to help you succeed. I love my job, so help me do it
well. Ask for help when you need it. Give me feedback and constructive criticism. Make suggestions.
We are in this together!
Your work begins this summer. It is absolutely necessary for you to maintain your exposure to Spanish
this summer and this work will ensure that you do so. Below, I have listed the assignments I expect you
to complete as well as some resources and general suggestions for improving your language skills.
A. AP Themes and Textbook Temas
Your first job this summer is to familiarize yourself with the six themes that make up the AP Spanish
curriculum. These themes are found within the textbook Temas, which you will take home this
summer. You first job is to become comfortable with the format of the text and the set-up of your
new supersite. Although we will not be working exclusively from the text, it will be a very important
part of the class.
You are to read, listen to and complete assignments for Tema 1: La familias y comuniades this summer.
TAKE NOTES AND WRITE DOWN PAGE NUMBERS SO WE CAN GO OVER THEM IN THE FALL.
Please do the assignments in the order that I have assigned them. I have included a check-list to help
you stay organized.
Preliminary: DO NOT SKIP! Read through the front pages (páginas vi-xxv). Then, look at the table of
contents for the Apéndices on page 418. Familiarize yourself with the resources there. You will get
much more out of this text if you know how to use it to your advantage. The appendices are
extremely useful.
The next page has a list of the work, in order, that you should do using Temas and the Supersite. One
note: As you work through Tema 1, you should take your notes using the LISTA DE VERIFICACIÓN
(Checklist) document that I have given you. Please write the answers to all assignments in a new,
marble composition notebook. DO NOT TYPE. You will need to have two marble composition
notebooks for this class, one for writing and the other for notes. You should continue to use the
writing notebook from Sp V and begin a new one for Temas notes.
1
This summer assignment has been adapted from a document created by P. Dragggett.
ENTONCES poco a poco por el verano: (PLEASE DO ALL WORK IN YOUR NOTEBOOK)
1. Read and copy the preguntas esenciales for Tema 1 (pg. 3) in your notebook. Think about how you
would answer them. Jot down a few notes in English or Spanish. Your goal is to be able to discuss
these questions when you finish working through this unit.
2. Every two weeks, complete on contexto. There are 4 contextos covered in depth: las comunidades
educativas, las redes sociales, la geografía humana, and las tradiciones y los valores. There are two
smaller contextos: la ciudadanía global and la estructura de la familia but you do not have to worry
about those over the summer.
3. As you do each of the 4 contextos, follow the same order of exercises that I have listed below:
a. Copy the PUNTOS DE PARTIDA into your notebook. Think about how you would answer these
questions. Look up vocabulary you need to discuss them. You can list your vocabulary in your
notebook or you can add them to Mi vocabulario feature on the supersite.
b. DESARROLLO DEL VOCABULARIO exercises as indicated on your checklist.
c. Lectura 1.1 and exercises as indicated on your checklist. Note that each reading has a
series of PALABRAS CLAVE in the margins. These should be treated as official vocabulary
words and added to your notebook or Mi vocabulary supersite lists.
d. Lectura 1.2 and exercises as indicated on your checklist.
e. Audio pgs. and exercises as indicated on your checklist.
f. Conexiones culturales: Read and write down some notes about the products and practices
mentioned and how they may relate to the perspectives of the communities presented in the
reading.
B. Tablas de Noticias
To keep up with your listening and Reading comprehension over the summer, I would like you to read
and listen to current events at regular intervals. To do this, complete the TABLA DE NOTICAS handout
that I have given to you. You should do a minimum of 10 entries. Try to include an even amount of
listening and reading sources and try to address a variety of the TEMAS. You may type your entries
directly onto the TABLA. Although it is not required, I would suggest that you digitally keep files or
bookmarks for the sources that you find.
Here are some suggested sites where you can look for sources:
1. BBC Mundo
2. CNN en español
3. NewsMap
4. Radio ONU
5. Univisión
Final thoughts and comments:
When we return in September, I will collect your TEMAS notebook and your reading/listening TABLA for
a grade. This grade will be based on effort and completion, not on the accuracy of your Spanish. All
supersite exercises will count towards your first marking period grade. All supersite exercises must me
completed by the last Monday before our first day of classes.
Should you need help over the summer, email me at school and if you don’t get a response within 24
hrs, use my personal account: mmmarin@hotmail.com
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!
