community development in the MJP Samlout project. Since November
2008, MJP hired young adults or teachers from the community to be
the leaders in these initiatives. Sports coordinators run after school
sports clubs for 10-14 year old children and work with teachers to
enhance physical education programs in grades 1-6 at five primary
schools. Eco-Ranger leaders are running Eco-Ranger clubs in four
communities. The new Community Library and ECCD Centre opened
its doors in October 2011 and 45 3-4 year olds are enrolled in the
2011-2012 pilot ECCD program.
The local sports, eco-ranger, ECCD and library staff are a valued part
of the MJP Education Team and receive ongoing support and training,
both role-specific and leadership training. As part of this ongoing
training, student interns from York University worked with the MJP staff
to support and enhance these programs in 2009, 2010, 2011 and
2012. The internship program was very successful and rewarding for
everyone involved.
The interns will work as part of the Education Team to identify the

Highlights of Organization/background information:
In 2003, Ms. Angelina Jolie created the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation
(MJP) to implement conservation and community development
programmes in northwestern Cambodia. In 2006, it officially launched
the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Samlout commune
(Battambang province) creating environmental, social and economic
development programmes to reduce extreme rural poverty and
increase equality of opportunities for over 5000 villagers. Interventions
are being made in: health care, education, agriculture, infrastructure,
and conservation. All are essential elements working together to fight
poverty, disease, inequality and ignorance.
Cambodia made considerable progress in strengthening its education
system in 2007 with the assistance of various organizations such as
USAID and JICA (Japanese Development Aid). However, because of
limited resources, the Government could not include Samlout in the
teacher training programmes or provide sufficient school resources for
both teachers and students.
Consequently, MJP took the lead in implementing the Ministry of
Education’s child-friendly school programmes in Samlaut. The initial
focus was on repairing school structures, providing safe water supplies
and toilet facilities, building school libraries and providing nutrition and
bicycles for children so they could attend schools. Since 2007 the
focus has also been on developing teacher capacity through
professional development, expanding the curriculum to include
Kindergarten classes and a lower secondary program, establishing an
early childhood centre, after school sports program and eco-ranger
clubs. Five primary schools (K to Gr.6) and one lower secondary
school (Gr. 7-9) are part of this project.

Position Description:
Large Mammal Monitoring Technician
Caño Palma Biological Station lies at the southern tip of Barra Del
Colorado Wildlife Refuge (BCWR) and north of Tortuguero National
Park. The area is rich with mammal species, a number of them found
there are listed as endangered. Over the past four years, a large
mammal monitoring program was instituted to provide a baseline on
current mammal species composition and abundance. Presently,
thirty-five species have been accounted for, including Baird’s tapir,
the Central American spider monkey, jaguars and other smaller cats,
and others which are on the Mammal Checklist. Major impacts to the
mammal population are anthropogenic in nature, and include habitat
loss and degradation, and poaching. Environmental education is
critical to creating change in the area as it relates to reducing
anthropogenic impacts.
Job description:
The intern working under the direction of the COTERC station
manager at the Caño Palma Biological Station and any available
volunteers will continue the established comparative transects used
in the large mammal monitoring program. The intern may also work
under the supervision of a PhD candidate if the candidate is present,
otherwise, will work in coordination with the station manager and
research coordinator to maintain the transects and with routine data
collection for tracks on these transects. The intern will also assist in
the ongoing sea turtle conservation program and other programs
where deemed necessary.
The intern will:
• Coordinate with the research coordinator, station manager and
potentially a PhD candidate to assist in the maintenance and weekly
monitoring of presence/absence data following the mammal
monitoring program as the protocol dictates which includes a once a
week data collection on the rough muddy terrain research transects
• Transcribe the data into the established database, identify tracks,
and ensure new data is brought back to the Canadian office and
principal investigator, Dr. Kymberley Snarr.
• Support and assist other interns under the direction of the research
coordinator and station manager, and the volunteer partners with the
sea turtle conservation program.
• If times permits, work with interns to help prepare environmental

the region and make the course outline user friendly for future
interns.
• Write a report on completion of the internship on his/her summer's
work and suggest recommendations for improving the internship and
educational programs.
From the three month study, the intern will develop a written report
which is two-fold. First, the report will indicate what was
accomplished during their stay as it relates to the current mammal
monitoring study in the Caño Palma area. And secondly, a critique of
the current program and suggestions on how to collect data that
would be usable in a scientific, statistical analysis needs to be part of
the report. The report may include a plan of action if it is feasible, and
any alternative ideas of a livelihood from poaching, or macro-level
analysis for alternatives to the area supported by successful case
studies and literature would be welcome. This report is expected
within one month of return to Canada and is deliverable to the two
contacts listed above.
Specific tasks will include:
• Working on developing a strong understanding of the mammal
program.
• Aiding in suggesting or developing a direction for future interns to
aid the mammal program based on their experiences in the program.
• Ensuring that each party involved shall be aware of their tasks and
responsibilities and will have a complete understanding of why the
projects are so important.

Janaagraha is a Bangalore based not-for-profit organisation that works
with citizens and government to change the quality of life in India’s
cities and towns.
The term “quality of life” has two separate aspects, distinct and interrelated: the first is “quality of urban infrastructure and services”: the
roads, drains, traffic, transport, water supply etc in our urban areas.
The second aspect of “quality of life” is the “quality of citizenship”: the
role that urban residents play by participating in civic issues,
deepening democracy and holding our public institutions accountable
in delivering various goods and services. This second aspect includes
very importantly the aspect of voluntarism.
Founded in 2001 by Ramesh Ramanathan and Swati Ramanathan,
Janaagraha started as a movement to include people's participation in
public governance and has now evolved into a robust institution for
Citizenship and Democracy.

Position Description:
The primary job responsibility is organizing and conducting the guided
visits to the Collection. Our visiting season runs from late April to the
end of September and there are very many requests to handle. This is
definitely a job for a student with good “people skills”: we receive
groups from the general (and unqualified) public as well as from such
highly-qualified visitors as artists, museum directors, professors, and
journalists, often from all over the world. Their presence represents a
rare opportunity to enter into contact with operators in the fields of
contemporary art and culture. Visits last about 5 hours, are conducted
in English and Italian and can sometimes be held as often as 5-6 times
a week. The intern must be be well-disposed towards a bilingual
experience, physically fit, healthy and enjoy walking and being with
people.
Handling correspondence, answering the telephone and other office
work is requested when interns are not conducting visits.
Secondary job responsibilities depend on the intern’s aptitude and
good will. In such a small organization as ours, the things to do range
from the (only) seemingly inconsequential to the highly important. The
former include include typing, filing, helping with small organizational
jobs while the more challenging duties may include assisting artists
working/staying at Celle; helping organize events such as exhibitions,
performances, concerts, etc.; writing/editorial/graphics projects like
producing catalogues, press releases; assisting members of the press.
Specific tasks will include:
• Spending the first week/10 days preparing intensely for the tours.
• Conducting visits to the Collection in English and Italian.
• Dealing, in both languages, with acceptances/rejections of the many
requests for visits that arrive by telephone, mail, e-mail.
• Helping organize/communicate the special event(s) that are held here
every summer.
• Be present to help greet/guide the Gori family’s guests.
Expected work hours: Mostly half days (either morning or afternoon
according to the visiting schedule) from Monday - Saturday (Sundays
are always days off for us all). We ask that the intern be more available
in the very busy period (usually May-mid June) in exchange to having
more time off in July.
Preferred start date: May 1 (for training in the first week of May). By
day 8 they need to be able to conduct the tours on their own in both
languages. For this reason adequate preparation is required before
departure from York University (our catalogues and info are available
in the university library, we have a detailed bilingual website)
Qualifications/skills required:
• Proficient in Microsoft Office especially Word, Excel and Powerpoint
• Need to be able to proof-read in English
• Must have an intermediate level of Italian which will allow them not
only to be trained to do visits in that language but, especially, to be
able to communicate with the Gori family and other staff members.
• Good people skills
• Background in Art History and/or Italian Language particularly
recommended
Language requirements:
Fluent English; intermediate Italian
Highlights of Organization/background information:
In 1982, Giuliano Gori was the first private collector in the world to start
commissioning site-specific art and today his collection represents one
of the largest and most qualified of its kind in the world. Each year we
receive (by appointment) several thousand visitors who are all guided
through the collection. There are only two people running this
international collection so there is ample possibility for interns to be
involved in every aspect of our work.

Nkosi’s Haven is a recognized NGO in South Africa that has been in
operation since 1999 offering holistic care and support for destitute
HIV/AIDS infected mothers, her children, and resulting AIDS orphans
(infected or not).
Nkosi’s Haven is named after Nkosi Johnson, the young AIDS activist
who passed away on International Children’s Day on June 1st 2001,
who dearly wanted a facility that would care for the mom and her child.
He had been separated from his mom because of the HIV diagnosis
and he never wanted that to happen to any other child. He also wanted
HIV positive people to be cared for without discrimination or prejudice.
At Nkosi’s Haven, all of our mothers and children (currently totalling
approx. 160) live in total ‘freedom’ at one of our two locations in
Johannesburg. All of our children attend private schools (in the
bridging sense), receive all disciplines of therapy (play, remedial,
occupational, speech, and hopefully soon art), and we are working on
providing sporting lessons as well. Our mothers are encouraged to
build their capacity through various activities, during which, if
leadership and initiative is shown, an internal position will be offered
(such as cook, childcare worker, matron, resident manager etc.)
Further, we ask mothers to ‘foster’ our young resident orphans,
hopefully providing for some additional support in substitute for the loss
of their own mothers.
Over the past decade we have strived to become a prototype for
holistic care for women and children affected by HIV/AIDS. While the
energy and passion of our staff and dedicated volunteers has allowed
us to achieve this for those residing at Nkosi’s Haven in Berea, and at
our second site, the Nkosi’s Haven Village in Alan Manor,
Johannesburg, we are in a position whereby, with additional funding,
we will be able to expand our facilities and accommodate more
resident women and children. Further, we have recently purchased a
piece of fertile farm land just outside of Johannesburg. While we
currently do not have the capital to develop this site, we hope to use it
not only to grow food to feed an increasing number of residents, but as
a site for individual capacity building, and economic empowerment
through the sale of surplus crops.
Through all of the work we do, we ensure that our residents learn how
to live with AIDS, not die from it. With this objective in mind, we have
built a happy and energetic community where our children can develop
and become self-confident, mature, and responsible members of their
community.
