Rahway Public Schools “Expecting Excellence” Kline Place P.O. Box 1024 Rahway, NJ 07065 (732) 396-1000 KEVIN K. ROBINSON, Ph.D. Program Supervisor of STEM (732) 396-1015 (732) 396-2635 krobinson@rahway.net Dear Parents and Guardians, It is my goal as Program Supervisor of STEM to provide the students of Rahway with the best education possible in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. In my role as math and science supervisor, we have made many positive changes to those curricula. In 2012, due to the increased rigor required by the Common Core State Standards, we implemented a new math curriculum in the elementary schools based upon Singapore Math called Math in Focus. This new curriculum replaced our previous Everyday Math curriculum and focuses on problem solving and visualization through the Concrete + Pictorial + Abstract method of instruction. We now have Math in Focus as our math curricula in grades K-7. In 2013, in order to increase the rigor at both the Academy and High School, we began offering all 8th grade students Algebra I. This allows our students the opportunity to take additional higher-level math courses once they enter high school, as well as prepare them for future science courses. During the most recent school year (2014-15), we implemented an Algebra I Honors class in the 7th grade. Students in this cohort have the opportunity to take Geometry Honors as 8th graders and when they enter high school be able to take Algebra II Honors as freshman, Pre-Calculus as sophomores, Calculus A/B as juniors, and finally Calculus B/C as seniors. This cohort of Rahway students will be the first to take such a rigorous program of study in preparation for advanced math courses in college. Since 2012, we have offered Rahway middle school students the opportunity to attend a free STEM Summer Camp held at the 7th & 8th grade Academy. Due to the success of this program, we now offer students in grades 5 through 8 the opportunity to attend this exciting camp. For the upcoming 2015-16 school year, we plan on offering elementary students the opportunity to join a STEM club at their school. We also plan on several professional development opportunities for teachers in the anticipated implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2016. Please feel free to contact me at tel. 732-396-1015 or via email at krobinson@rahway.net if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you. Sincerely, Kevin K. Robinson, PhD Program Supervisor of STEM
