In Writing, students will be copying their edited rough draft onto another rough draft to continue strengthen their writing. Students will continue editing, and then will create their final copy. As stated before, the publishing party for Unit 1 will take place the 2nd week in November. The publishing party will take place on Thursday November 12, 2015 at 8:45AM. Please let me know if you can provide a snack for the publishing event. In Math, we are finishing up our chapter on subtraction strategies. Students will review solving multi step word problems, identifying and applying key subtraction words, developing equations from Fact Family Triangles and part part whole visuals, making 10 to help subtract, and using addition to help them subtract. For Word Study this week, we are still studying types of nouns. We will focus on singular, plural, irregular plural, and collective nouns. This week in particular, we are focusing on turning nouns from singular to plural (adding s, es, or ies) and also irregular plural nouns. Students will be using Spelling City to work on these skills along with another website (Wednesday and break homework). Students should continue to fill out their reading logs. This reading log can be kept at home, or in their folder if it is easier, and should be filled out each day that the student reads. When the log is completed, they should bring the log back to school to receive an extra ticket. It is important for children to read independently and also listen to reading. When your child is reading or you are reading to them, it is important to have a discussion about the book to increase comprehension. Types of questions could be who were the characters, what was your favorite part, what was the story about, what facts did you learn, what do you think will happen next, how would you change the book, where did the book take place, how would you feel if this happened to you, can you make a connection to the book (text to text, text to self), how is the character feeling and how do you know, why did the character act that way, etc. In Social Studies, students will continue working in groups to create Anti-bullying skits. Each group will focus on creating a short skit that demonstrates how to solve a situation of conflict or bullying. Tuesday is our field trip to Turtle Back Zoo. Students need a “Brown Bag Lunch” which means that all items can be thrown away or recycled when they are finished eating. We will depart around 9-9:15AM and will return between 2-2:15PM.
