ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH Central Michigan University is one of the nation’s 100 largest public universities and the fourth largest in Michigan, with more than 21,000 students on its Mount Pleasant campus and another 7,000 enrolled online and at more than 50 locations across North America. CMU offers academic programs at the undergraduate, master’s, specialist and doctoral levels, including several in key areas of strength and emerging interest. CMU also has established a College of Medicine, which is actively recruiting students for its inaugural class that will start in the summer of 2013. Position Summary: The AVP for Biomedical Research reports directly to the Vice President for Research and will cooperate with the Deans of colleges related to biomedical scholarship and research. This is a senior officer position in the University and, as such, the Assistant Vice President serves at the will of the President. Devotes 60% of time to leading strategic planning and development of the broad biomedical research mission for CMU, and approximately 40% of time maintaining an active externally-funded research program. Builds bridges of scholarship and research between faculty in academic departments (such as Psychology, Sociology, Mathematics, Biology, Human Environmental Studies, School of Health Sciences, School of Rehabilitation and Medical Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science and the School of Engineering and Technology) and in the emerging College of Medicine. Promotes and facilitates research and resource development in biomedical areas that build on university strengths and faculty interest. Leads collaborative research initiatives in emerging areas with strong potential for external funding, such as individualized medicine, and fosters interdisciplinary research in the biomedical sciences. Where credentials warrant, faculty rank and tenure may be offered. Required Qualifications: - Ph.D. or M.D. with extensive research accomplishments in a biomedical field Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to interact well with others at all levels Excellent, demonstrated communication skills Previous administrative experience in academia, clinical research organizations or equivalent Experience working with funding agencies and demonstrated success obtaining external research grants Preferred Qualifications: - Prior experience in leading interdisciplinary programs - Experience leading successful multi-investigator grants from agencies such as the NIH - Experience with compliance issues (including IACUC and IRB) Duties and Responsibilities: - Provides leadership in developing interdisciplinary biomedical research across the university. - Works closely with the Vice President for Research, the Deans, faculty and staff to develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for research in biomedical areas. - Establishes activities to build and sustain partnerships for externally-funded biomedical research including identifying opportunities for interdisciplinary initiatives based on existing and emerging academic strengths and interests; fosters the development of interdisciplinary research teams; identifies opportunities for external sponsorship of biomedical research; and provides leadership in developing collaborative proposals for external funding. - Works with college Deans to facilitate interdisciplinary biomedical research and ensures the needs of this research are considered in decisions regarding research resources including space and facilities. - Monitors, evaluates and reports on the progress of biomedical research activities in the context of the strategic plan.
