BIOMEDICAL GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATION -Merit Request Funding FormName of requesting Party: Penn Biomedical Policy Group Date of Event (if applicable): Spring 2013 semester Number of BGSA Members the event can accommodate: 20-40 Amount being requested from BGSA: $450 BGSA cost per member (Amount requested/Number of members): $11.25-22.5 Description of the Event: The Penn Biomedical Policy Group was created for scientists interested in the relationship between science and public policy. We will explore this field by discussing current issues in monthly meetings, receiving career information from speakers and info sessions, and refining relevant skills through public communication and debates. We will hold monthly discussion group meetings through May, host two guest speakers, and have a career development meeting, for a total of 7 meetings. In our organizational meeting we had 15 interested BGSA students from CAMB, NGG, and IGG, so we are confident we will have at least a group this large each month. We would like to order 4 pizzas per meeting ($50 per meeting) and allow for $100 for travel reimbursement for the two speakers. Describe why the event, activity or project is of interest to BGSA: Whether students are planning a science policy career, or simply looking to stay abreast with important issues, the Penn Biomedical Policy Group will help them learn about and navigate the field of science policy. With an overabundance of doctoral degrees being granted in the sciences, it has never been more important for BGSA students to explore alternative careers. We expect to find many more interested BGSA students by advertising through the BGSA listserv, as most of our advertising to date has been through the CAMB social listserv and word of mouth. Please list any additional funding sources (Is BGSA the only source available for the event?): N/A Budget Item Pizza (4 $10 PapaJohns pizzas +tax/tip = $50/meeting) X 7 meetings Speaker travel reimbursement (For gas and parking), 2 speakers Total Signature: Michael Allegrezza Funding Requested $350 $100 $450 Date: 1/6/13
