August 20, 2015 Parents and Guardians: Kristin Campbell kcampbell@mvsc.k12.in.us (219)650-5307 Ext. 7545 I am truly excited to have your son or daughter in my Principles of Biomedical Science class this year. This course is the first in a challenging sequence of four courses designed to prepare your student for a successful college experience and potential career in the healthcare/biomedical field. This course is designed to allow students to investigate human body systems and health conditions including: heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, and infectious diseases. The goal of this course is to not only explore medical concepts through hands-on labs and activities, but also to gain an understanding of the many careers that are available within the biomedical field. We will be designing and completing college-level labs and activities with the goal of leading students to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the human body. This course will require significant work, effort and brain power. Throughout the year, students will have daily access to a laptop to complete assignments. However, the pace at which the student works and their time management skills will determine if they regularly complete assignments in class. I understand that all students may not have reliable access to a computer and/or internet at home. Please understand the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum is delivered via an on-line learning management system. For this reason I ask that you work with your child to put a plan in place now, in the event it might become necessary to complete an assignment outside of the normal class period. The required materials for this course are determined by the PLTW curriculum. These include: 3-ring binder (1 1/2 inch), tabs/dividers for binder, composition notebook for PBS ONLY (to be left in classroom) and one subject spiral bound notebook for PBS ONLY. I also ask that the students have pencils, blue/black pens, highlighter, one glue stick or small bottle of glue, one black sharpie, one roll of clear tape, colored pencils, one large (one gallon) Ziplock freezer bag and ear buds. Be sure to also read the homework and cell phone policy that was given to the students in the Classroom Expectations handout. Please feel free to contact me at any time throughout the trimester. Thank you for all that you do to ensure that your son/daughter is successful. Sincerely, Kristin Campbell Please return this portion of the parent letter. I have read the letter from Mrs. Campbell and will assist my child in every way possible to ensure his/her success in the Principles of Biomedical Science course.
