Enrichment Options – Spring Term 2015 Monday Mr Bell Name Description Senior Football Pupils will advance their understanding of various formations used in 5-a-side football and utilise these systems in small sided games. Pupils will also have the opportunity to advance their individual skills in their chosen position. Extinction Pupils will discover what the Earth used to be like and the extinct creatures that used to inhabit our planet. Pupils will learn about different dinosaurs as well as some modern species that are currently under threat. The pupils will look at the collected evidence to get an insight into the lives and characteristics of these extinct species. Pupils will also explore the how the world has changed over time and chain of events that lead to their extinction. School Newspaper This enrichment is designed cater for pupils with a keen interest in writing and news, and will provide an additional form of student-voice in the school. The pupils will be encouraged to write, with support, about school events as well as subjects and topics that interest them in the news and wider world. The content, design and production of the paper will all be pupil-led giving opportunity to develop skills in research, literacy, ICT and design, as well as generate a wider interest in news, journalism and current affairs. Pupils will be assessed on their engagement and participation, and each edition will be available to staff and pupils in the school. Y11 Maths Additional GCSE lesson Around the World This enrichment will allow pupils to research and explore a desired destination that they have either visited or would like to. It will allow pupils to be creative using the internet and resources such as travel books and brochures to create their very own personalised version! Pupils are able to bring in photographs or souvenirs to use/copy to enhance their project. Pupils will practice good literacy skills when researching, designing and following instructions. Pupils will be assessed by the completion of their own mini project. Mr Broughton Pupils will take part in an army style fitness regime. You will go to the park and do burpies, planks and press ups. You will finish each session feeling alive, but it will be hard work getting there. This kind of fitness will make you feel more alert and your school work may improve. You can do it. Mr Hill Pupils will take part in writing, storyboarding and acting in a selection of short films. Throughout the term pupils will learn various tips and tricks to help them make their own films. They will then be given challenges where they will have to demonstrate their new skills. Army Boot Camp Script to Screen Y7 Group Communication The pupils will learn about the ‘Alert Programme’ and how they can identify their energy level (low, just right or high) and use various strategies to assist them to adjust their levels of alertness in class. They will learn that listening and moving in time to different types of music can influence their level of alertness, whilst movement (stretches, exercise, fiddling with items) is also an effective strategy that can help them adjust their energy levels. Pupils will participate in activities that aim to boost selfesteem. They will learn about the Eight Multiple Intelligences and discover their individual learning styles and their strengths. Pupils will take the pieces that they are learning in guitar, drum or bass lessons at school and bring them together in an ensemble arrangement, for performance at the end of term. Pupils will look at the difficulties of staying safe online and explore examples of young people finding themselves in uncomfortable or dangerous situations while using the internet. Pupils will then use their creative skills to devise and produce a series of media presentations to promote awareness amongst pupils in the school. Yr10 and Yr11 pupils who took this enrichment last term will continue to focus on the Microsoft Office package including: Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Publisher and Outlook and will sit the Functional Skills Level 1 or Level 2 external examination at the end of the term. Pupils will also play inter school fixtures so that they gain a firmer understanding of teamwork. You will learn to play various Sudoku games including Mr Broughton’s favourite of Killer Sudoku. You will tax your brain and keep it agile. You will improve your logical thinking skills and perhaps develop a healthy addiction to while away the time. You never need be bored again waiting for a bus if you have Sudoku. Pupils who sign up for the DofE Enrichment will work towards the Bronze DofE award, which is a nationally recognized award scheme. They will take part in two overnight expeditions in the summer term, during which they will camp, cook and navigate self-sufficiently! The Enrichments will give them the opportunity to learn the key camping and navigational skills needed to take part in these expeditions, as well as teaching them communication skills, team work and supporting them with the other sections of the award; skills, physical activities and volunteering. Pupils will be given the opportunity to test themselves against fellow Moat pupils (and the clock) over varying distances. Areas for improvement will be discussed and specific training plans can then be developed. Over time, endurance, stamina and pacing will improve with a long-term aim of competing in cross-country/track races. In this enrichment the pupils will explore the most precious, most wonderful thing in the universe, us. Delivered through carefully selected documentaries, discussions and interactive activities the pupils will deepen their knowledge and understanding of our place in the universe and where our civilisation is heading. We will look at styles of photography, famous photographers and the many uses for photographs. We will also try to re-create some classic photographical pieces. Poetry Slam Pupils will enjoy reading a variety of poems as well as creating their own. Later on pupils will get the opportunity to work on their delivery and team up to perform poems to other members of the class. They will study authentic techniques and rhythm patterns and bring these together in an ensemble performance. Pupils will play a variety of rhythm and music games developing their musical understanding. They will need to work together with their peers, show patience in taking turns and be respectful to other members of the group. This activity will develop rhythm and hand-eye coordination in a fun and interactive way. Pupils will explore the styles and techniques of Manga Art. They will learn to create manga-style characters, focusing on how to draw facial features and expressions to reveal the mood and personality of the character. The project will also include typography and background creation. Using these skills, pupils will devise their own manga-style cartoon strip. There will be a brief history of cinema, with some viewings of classic moments. This will be a fun way of learning strategy and team work skills as well as improving reflexes and understanding of probability. Pupils will learn the theory and practical ‘tricks’ of musical composition to write their own songs and musical sequences.
