POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Development Officer REPORTS TO: Director of Development PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Development Officer position exists to advance the mission of St. Olaf College by securing, managing, and stewarding gifts through personal relationships and good business practices. The Development Officer will manage a portfolio of approximately 400 households. These households represent donors giving in the range of $2,500 to $9,999. This range of donors provides a critical foundation to the college’s annual fundraising efforts and creates a pipeline of major gift prospects. In addition to soliciting annual support at these levels, the Development Officer will invite prospects to make deferred gifts. Gifts will focus on supporting the strategic initiatives of the college as identified by the St. Olaf Strategic Plan. The position also will provide leadership for additional projects to steward and grow this group of donors. This position works closely with the Director of Development to achieve fundraising goals via personal cultivation and solicitation of St. Olaf alumni, parents, and friends. 1. Qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward annual gifts of $2,500-$9,999 and deferred gifts via phone, mail, email and personal visits. 2. Through the use of highly segmented and personalized communications, cultivate, solicit and steward deferred gifts. 3. Identify and qualify prospective major gift prospects. 4. Develop stewardship plans as appropriate for assigned donors in coordination with the Stewardship Office. 5. Develop and implement an annual plan that establishes personal and program goals and that outlines and prioritizes activities, events and travel in support of overall division goals. 6. Submit timely and accurate updates and progress reports on personal and program goals. 7. Contribute to the overall success of the Development Department and of the Advancement Division through teamwork and collaboration. 8. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. EDUCATION: Essential: Desirable: B.A. B.A. from a liberal arts college EXPERIENCE: Essential: 3-5 years of fundraising experience and strong interpersonal communication skills, particularly phone skills. Understanding of current giving. Aptitude with data analysis. Desirable: Understanding of planned giving.. Experience in other advancement related programs; experience in an academic setting KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Commitment to the mission of St. Olaf College. Understanding of, and comfort within, a model of donor-centered fundraising. Excellent interpersonal skills, especially written and oral communication. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external volunteers. Entrepreneurial Previous experience working in fundraising and development. Strong project management skills with attention to detail PHYSICAL DEMANDS: None WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Typical office environment WORK SCHEDULE: FTE: 1.0 Term: 12 months/year Shift: Campus office hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; evening and weekend hours are required for special events.
