Students will discover balance in art, government, diet, mathematics, and even elevators. o Symbols (Grades 2-3): In this unit, students will explore why symbols are used, the origins of some symbols, and the universal acceptance of other symbols. Shields of long ago will be compared to modern day mascots. Students will investigate ancient symbols from the Chinese and Mayan cultures. Students will identify modern symbols seen at the Olympics and during patriotic ceremonies. Students will also take part in a search and study made of practical symbols used for traffic, weather, and directions. Students will learn to appreciate the things that concrete and abstract symbols represent in our world.
