Pain Management with Oriental Medicine
Health is primarily maintained through Chi & Blood circulation. Stagnation can cause pain and illness;

The ideal in Chinese Medicine is to live a long life in excellent health, meaning
minimize the effect of wear-and-tear that causes pain and degeneration of the mind and body.
Three approaches to using the body’s self-healing mechanism:

1) Injury Recuperation Acupuncture/Intervention
The most effective time to treat an injury is the same-day: Acupuncture can treat trauma out of the

Based on our pain clinic, the most serious injury most people sustain is surgery; including dentistry and

never get out of pain after a given surgery because of the initial trauma, scar tissue, or infection and are
drug dependent. Neuropathy is also a result of surgery and other procedures that may be addressed.
An acupuncturist with the right training may help those that are drug dependent by treating the origin
of the pain inside the body and may also help alleviate morphine withdrawals.
Why are cortisone shots, surgery, drugs (phenotol drip system) and physical therapy not the answer
for many patients?
Cortisone shots eat the protective fat layers around injection sites which can lead to bone-on-bone
friction that can result in permanent pain that cannot be relieved. Shots provide only temporary pain
reduction.
Surgery can be completely necessary in some circumstances (when a tumor is breaking a bone etc) for
trauma intervention-the specialty of modern medicine. You should always consult a physician about
serious pain.
Most often, life style pain is best resolved by improving lifestyle choices. A recent study on the
nation’s top 10 most-scheduled procedures indicated that up to 80% of elective spine surgeries

performed on pain patients did not provide significant pain relief on a 10 year basis after procedure.
Scar tissue growth, misdiagnosis, poor life style and infection were the most common detractors.
Drugs
Physical therapy: Utilizes strength/ muscle tension for recovery. Not effective for connective tissue
pain, a central problem for many chronic conditions.
Recommendations:
One acupuncture treatment before and one after dental work can prevent pain, swelling and future
health problems from drug dependence. Use acupuncture as soon as possible if you have chronic pain to
possibly avoid needing surgery- the older you are the more slowly the body heals.
Treating years later can still be very effective but preventing set-in is most efficient
Acupuncture treats the origin of pain in each patient: it can be an organ/system imbalance, trauma or
stress-related cause, combined with diet, exercise and occupational considerations.
OM has many practical exercises and treatments for the nerves and connective tissues: tendons, joints,

Cold immobilizes healing fluids and chi flow. Is your iced spot still cold to the touch from years ago?

Steam your veggies- it prevents muscle cramps and improves ratio of nutrient absorption. No salads.
Sour-tasting foods in excess can tighten the tendons. Sour foods include: Citrus, vinegar, dairy, chicken
and other common foods.
Balance health and fitness
The harder you push the mind and body the more replenishment is needed or else premature aging,
internal fat storage or progressive injury is possible. As we age our body’s self-healing mechanism slows

We don’t want to sacrifice long-term vitality for short-term performance. It’s better to die young at an
old age then to die old at a young age.
Get into fitness slowly. Winter is not the time to push hard when starting a fitness habit. The body is in a
rest mode (like the rest of nature) and is more susceptible to injury.
