Eastborough J I & N School - Curriculum Year 5 English Autumn 1 This half term in literacy Year 5 will looked at children’s significant authors focusing on Michael Morpurgo. They will read and compared stories and novels by Michael Morpurgo comparing themes, characters, settings and moods. Children will look at how the author helps you visualise the setting and characters through description. They also compare how authors choose to open their stories (action, description, dialogue, puzzle/questions) before writing their own story opener to ‘hook’ the reader and make them want to read on. This was followed by writing a new scene for the Butterfly Lion in the style of the author. Children will then write their own narrative inspired by the author, creating their own adventure stories. Also this half term Year 5 will read, compared and analysed poems from Sensational By Roger McGough. Children identify, discuss and evaluate figurative language used to create a visual imagine in The Magic of the Brain by Jenny Joseph and used the structure of this poem to write their own senses poem about autumn. Children also prepare poems about sound and how we hear, to read aloud and to perform, using tone, actions and volume, so that the meaning is clear to an audience. Autumn 2 This half term in literacy children will Eastborough J I & N School - Curriculum Year 5 Autumn 1 Autumn 2 This half term in Numeracy Year 5 will learn to read, write, order, round and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit. This was followed by adding and subtracting whole numbers with more than 4 digits using the column method. In addition to this children will discuss and share ideas about how to add and subtract large numbers mentally. This will be followed by solving addition and subtraction multi-step problems in real life situations. Maths Year 5 will learn to identify multiples and factors, recognise and use square numbers and cube numbers and identify prime numbers whilst continuing to learn their multiplication and division facts mentally. Children will also learn to multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000 Year 5 will identified 2D and 3D shapes and their properties including lines of symmetry, parallel lines, angles and the nets of 3D shapes. This half term in Numeracy children will Eastborough J I & N School - Curriculum Year 5 Science Autumn 1 The science topic this half term has been the property of materials. Children will compare and grouped together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity and their response to magnets. Also children will investigated which materials dissolve in liquid to form a solution and describe how to recover a substance from a solution. Children then continue to learn about solids, liquids and gases and investigated how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating. Whilst comparing materials, children discuss reasons, based on evidence for the particular uses of everyday materials, including metals, wood and plastic Children will sketch and evaluate self-portraits. Art & Design Computing Children will discuss and created an information pack showing their understanding of using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognising acceptable/unacceptable behaviour and identifying a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact Design & Technology Linking to the Topic Anglo Saxons Year 5 will make their own weaving pattern using a paper plate and wool. Children generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion as a class. Once the main idea are planned children will create their own weaving template using a paper plate and weaved a decorative pattern using wool. Once completed they will evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the Autumn 2 In science children will continue to investigate materials and their properties. Children will develop their understanding of solids, liquids and gases through a series of investigations such as; which materials will keep the water the warmest? What happens to water when it is heated? Which surface will ice melt on the fastest? These experiments’ will develop children’s understanding of solids liquids and gases and develop their scientific knowledge of a fair test and reading and comparing their results to write a clear conclusion. Suggesting how they could investigate further. Children will develop their understanding of sketching using different pencils and sketch Antarctic animals. They will also use watercolours to paint Antarctic animals, creating a wash and improving their brush skills. Chilldren will learn how to create their own computer game using scratch. Children will create a model for a basic game. Once children have developed this understanding of control and modelling they will create their own game. Linking to the topic Antarctica, Year 5 will make their own models of Antarctic animals using clay. Children will create a Eastborough J I & N School - Curriculum views of others to improve their work. Year 5 Autumn 1 Geography Children will identify towns which were named during the Anglo-Saxon period using an atlas. Children also will use an atlas to develop their understanding of where the Saxons came from and where they settled. History Languages (Key Stage 2) Year 5 will research, study and investigate the Anglo-Saxon period in history. Children will learn about Anglo-Saxon invasions, settlements and kingdoms: place names and village life, Anglo-Saxon art and culture, research and write in their own words about the resistance by Alfred the Great and the first king of England. Children also will read and develop their understanding of Anglo-Saxons myths such as Beowulf and retell the story in their own words. In French Year 5 will engage in conversation, ask and answer questions, express opinions and respond to others by; greeting people, asking questions about their families and being able to answer questions about themselves. Children will start to develop their written French with the aim of being able to write about themselves by the end of Autumn 2. Autumn 2 Eastborough J I & N School - Curriculum Music Year 5 PE Autumn 1 Autumn 2 In PE Year 5 will play competitive games such as football, hockey and netball and apply and develop their understanding of attacking and defending. Every week Year 5 will go swimming in order to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. RE PSHCE In PSCHE Children will discuss E-Safety and CyberBullying. Children will also attend a Childline workshop. In PSCHE Children will take part in Anti Bullying week. During this week children will learn and discuss how to stop bullying and what to do if you are being bullied or if you see someone being bullied. Children will create anti bullying posters and bunting to be displayed around school. Eastborough J I & N School - Curriculum Crosscurricular Theme In literacy children will read and discuss Michael Morpurgo’s version of the Anglo-Saxon myth Beowulf. In literacy children will read Ice trap which is based in the Antaractic and tells the story of an explorer becoming trapped on the ice on an expedition. In science children will investigate how to keep things warm including themselves and which materials are the best at keeping things warm.
