Bullis Lower School Experiential Education September 10th and September 11th, 2015 Regular arrival and dismissal times for both days! Thursday, September 10th: Second Grade The second grade class will travel by Bullis bus to visit the intake for the Washington Aqueduct, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, and the Great Falls of the Potomac River. The park entrance is located at 11710 MacArthur Blvd., Potomac MD. The purpose of this trip will be: (1) To consider the concept of basic needs, in particular where drinking water in the Washington, DC area comes from, (2) To cultivate a geographic and historical sense of place thinking about the C&O canal and by hiking out to the Potomac River and the Great Falls Overlook, and (3) To gain a deeper appreciation for public “green spaces” (including National Parks) while building Esprit de Corp. Students will need to bring a bag lunch and a drink for this outing (no soda, glass bottles, or candy please). Snack and water bottles will be provided. Students should wear casual, comfortable clothing and sneakers or tennis shoes. Third Grade Third graders will travel to the Kid Museum in Bethesda, Maryland for a wonderful STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) morning. They will use problem solving skills and creativity to create circuits, robots and wind tubes in a "hands-on" exploration. Students should dress in casual, comfortable dress with sneakers or tennis shoes. Please pack a lunch and drink (no glass or sodas please) that we will enjoy on the new playground with the entire third grade. In the afternoon, we will tour and explore the Bullis campus as we get to know one another and build our third grade community together. Fourth Grade Fourth graders will tour the Baltimore Museum of Industry. They will not only simulate the roles of workers in Mr. Platt’s 1883 oyster cannery, students will also discover what it was like to work in Baltimore’s garment industry during its heyday. The goal is for fourth graders to work together and actively acquire an understanding of technology, innovation, immigration, labor issues, and Baltimore City history through dramatization and exploration that will ultimately help students create personal connections to their study of the northeast region of the United States. Fourth graders should wear casual, comfortable clothing and sneakers or tennis shoes. Please pack a lunch and a drink (no glass or soda please). Fifth Grade The fifth graders will travel to Baltimore Harbor to take a cruise on the Lady Maryland, an historic pungy schooner. They will learn about history, economics, and science during the adventure. Students will engage in a variety of hands on activities including raising and lowering the sails, testing the water, towing for plankton, fishing, and steering the ship. Children are permitted to wear free dress for the trip, but they must wear sturdy sneakers or other non-slip boat shoes. Sandals, open toed shoes or flip-flops are not permitted. We will set sail in rain or shine, so please dress in layers and pack a rain jacket and/or a sweatshirt. We will get plenty of sunshine on the deck of the boat; students need to apply sunscreen before we leave and pack extra sunscreen to reapply midday. Please pack a lunch (peanut and tree nut free, please) and a drink. Also, students should bring a refillable water bottle. It will be an exciting day! Friday, September 11th: All Lower School grades will unite and bond with team building at Montevideo Farm in Poolesville. A day at the farm for all LS students! Team building will be our focus as students welcome new friends and get reacquainted with old ones. Students will be divided into mixed-grade groups for activities when appropriate and also have time in grade level groups with grade level team teachers. Students should come dressed in casual, comfortable clothing, sneakers/tennis shoes with socks, hat or cap. Every student should bring a water bottle and a bag lunch (no glass bottles please). Sunscreen applied at home for the day is also suggested.
