SALINAS VALLEY WEATHER:
A strong storm is bringing heavy rain and snow to Oregon and Northern California
today. The weakening end of the moisture should bring from .05-.10 of rain to the
Monterey Bay area this afternoon thru evening. Trace amounts may occur in King City
similar to yesterday. Strong and gusty NW winds 24-35 mph both today and Tuesday.
Expect warmer weather Wed thru the weekend with warmest days Friday thru the
weekend. Max temps in the upper 50’s-60’s today, temps warm up into the 70’s along
the coast and 80’s-90’s inland lat this week thru the weekend.
SUPPLY/DEMAND
As we continue into May (National Salad Month), demand continues to be good on leafy
greens, with spring like conditions and better weather on the east coast. During the
month of May most vegetable production is coming out of the Salinas Valley, as
homegrown is not yet in production. Typically in this period demand from the west
coast is very good. Quality is good with some pinking and fringe burn on Romaine, and
broccoli is still showing some branchiness and knuckling.
OVERALL QUALITY
Overall quality is good on all products except Spinach quality is just fair and Romaine
quality is showing a little pinking and fringe burn. Green Leaf and Iceberg quality is
good. Broccoli quality is getting better with less branchiness and knuckling.
TRANSPORTATION
Trucks continue to be extremely tight and rates are higher. We are going to continue to
see an increase in rates and a shortage on equipment through the week.
ICEBERG LETTUCE
Iceberg industry supplies look to be short all week, quality is good and expect
pricing staying in the mid to upper teens the next week. We are seeing a bit of a
gap in supplies due to rains in January and would expect this slight gap for the
next week to 10 days. Market today is $15.60 liner and $16.60 wrap.
ROMAINE LETTUCE
Market prices are steady and around $7.00-$8.00. Romaine Hearts markets are
in the $11.00-$12.00 range. Weights on 24’s are average at 35-36#. Romaine
may show a little pinking and fringe burn due to rain. Quality is just fair.
GREEN LEAF, RED LEAF AND BUTTER
Tight supplies on Green Leaf and markets are $15.00. Butter markets moving
up to $16.00 and is in short supply; Red leaf we have lighter supplies and marke
is $12.00-$13.00.
BROCCOLI
Broccoli supplies are getting tighter, and quality is getting better. Small amount of
branchiness, and small amounts of knuckling; only sparse amount of cat eye and hollow
core. Broccoli market 14’s at $7.10, Asian crowns $11.60. Demand is good.
CAULIFLOWER
Cauliflower is in very light supply throughout the industry, and therefore we are
seeing an upward motion in the Cauliflower market. Prices are ranging from $20.00$25.00 for 12’s and $19.00-$22.00 for 9’s & 16’s. Demand is steady and quality is good.
CELERY
Celery market on 2’s and 2 ½’s seeem to be in ample supply, with all supplies out
of Oxnard. Demand is fair and markets are trending downwards, with prices
ranging from $10.50-$13.50 FOB Salinas. Quality is good.
SPRING MIX
Spring Mix supplies are plentiful and the mix heavier on greens and quality is fair.
Pricing continues to be $4.50 FOB.
SPINACH/ARUGULA
Spinach quality is fair and we have adequate supplies. Regular arugula supplies are
short. Wild Arugula supplies are plentiful.
