The student will be able to: · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · List the three basic component parts of a word. State the rule for using multiple word roots in a compound word. Accurately define the terms word root, suffix, prefix, combining vowel/form. State the rules for attaching prefixes and suffixes to a word root. Assess/evaluate the impact of personal attendance and meeting deadlines. Work effectively both independently and in diverse teams. Define a suffix and state the rule for using suffixes in a word. List the five body cavities and the organs contained within them. Identify regions, structural organization, and directional terms relating to the body. List the major structures of the skin and their functions. Define pathological conditions of the integumentary system and the diagnostic techniques used in treating these disorders. Identify the functions of the skeletal system as well as classifications of bones. Spell and pronounce each term as it is introduced on the audiotape. Identify the pathological conditions of each body system and explain the diagnostic techniques used to evaluate and treat each condition. Identify different types of muscles and label them on the appropriate diagram. Proofread transcription exercises re: muscles/joints and cardiovascular systems. Define the different range-of-motion movements of the skeletal muscles. Identify the structures and anatomical terms relating to the nervous system. Explain the diagnostic procedures common to the nervous system. State the difference between afferent and efferent nerves. List the structures of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Explain the major functions of the blood and lymphatic system. Identify the major pathological conditions of the blood and lymphatic system and the diagnostic techniques used in their diagnosis and treatment. Label the pathway of blood as it travels through the heart, to the lungs, and back through the heart. List the major functions of the cardiovascular system. Define common cardiovascular signs and symptoms, conditions, congenital heart diseases, and heart arrhythmias. List the major functions of the respiratory system, and the difference between external and internal respiration. Define common respiratory signs and symptoms (non-specific and pathological). MATERIALS OF INSTRUCTION Required: Delmar’s Comprehensive Medical Terminology, 4rd Edition, Betty Davis Jones, Delmar, 2008. Make sure the email address listed in your Personal Information is correct. COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS · · · · · Listen to the words on the audio cd (not required, but highly recommended). Read and study each required chapter. Complete all portions of the review exercises - you will not turn these in, but you may check your answers against the Answer Key located in the BTECH Lab at either campus. Submit the written and audio terminology review which is located at the end of each chapter (except Chapters 2 & 3). Participate in online discussion (discussion boards accessed through Communicate tab). Complete the CD-ROM Quiz for each chapter and submit it. Complete all tests. GRADING PROCEDURES Complete the exercises and quizzes (both in the text and on the CD-ROM) and the test before advancing to the next chapter. PLEASE NOTE: your first test is on both chapters one and two. After that, you are tested on each individual chapter. · · · 25% of final grade is based on completing your homework (15% for terms, 10% for cd quizzes). 10% of final grade is based on online participation and interactions. Do your best to make your interactions both meaningful and professional. The discussion forums are found in the "Communicate" area above. 65% of final grade is based on the average of the chapter tests. Your tests are timed – you have one minute per question. You have one attempt for each test – it must be completed the first time you access it. If you score below 70%, your instructor will allow you to take the test a second time. The average of the two test scores will be your final score for that test. A plagiarized assignment will result in—at minimum—zero credit for the assignment, but depending on the situation, plagiarism can also result in a 0.0 for the class. Again, depending on the situation, I may take further action. Academic dishonesty takes various forms and comes with the same penalties as does plagiarism. Simply…do all of your own work. ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE This is a suggested schedule to help you finish the course in ten weeks. There will be 11 tests to complete before the end of the quarter. You may choose to work faster than the following schedule outlines, but late work will not be accepted. Please email me if you have any questions. Any assignments or tests not completed by the posted weekly deadline will receive a 0.0. For each chapter listed below, you will need to complete the following: Read each chapter. Complete all chapter review exercises, with the exception of the word search and crossword puzzles, which are optional. You will not turn these in - they are for your review only. You can proof your review answers against the answer key available here in the online classroom. Submit the written and audio terminology review for each chapter. Be sure to number the terms so you receive credit for completing all of them. Complete the CD-ROM quiz for each chapter and submit the screen shot for each. If you are unsure home to complete a print-screen, please email me. Take the test. Remember that these tests are timed – one minute per question. You have one attempt, so you must complete the test the first time you access it. If you score less than 70% you may complete the test a second time. The average of the two scores will be used to calculate the final grade for the course.
