Course Description:
A systematic approach to scientific terms and medical words of Greek and Latin origin.
This course focuses on the accurate spelling and pronunciation of terms along with
abbreviations and other words classified as: diagnostic, anatomical, surgical,
radiological, or therapeutic. Some anatomy is discussed to correlate the use and context
of the terms.
The student will study and demonstrate the use of medical word stems, suffixes, and
prefixes as related to the body systems and associated diseases. Study and demonstrate
proficiency in the pronunciation, spelling, and definitions of medical terms, the use of
the medical dictionary and related reference materials.
Course objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:

1) Understand the need for exactness in medical vocabulary
2) Recognize that the meaning of complex medical terms can be derived by
analysis of simpler components.
3) Use a word-building system to write medical terms.
4) Acquire a basic foundation in medical terminology that will lead to
recognizing thousands of medical terms.
5) Write the singular form versus the plural form of terms.
6) Understand many terms relate to anatomy, pathology, surgical operations,
diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
7) Be familiar with the principal fields of medicine and allied health.
8) Identify and describe the major organ systems of the body.
9) Describe the major diseases and disorders affecting each body system.
10) Define word roots, combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes of medical terms.
11) Define new and unfamiliar words by analyzing the elements of medical
terminology.
12) Master pronunciation and spelling of common medical words.
13) Evaluate and interpret medical records and other forms of medical
communication.

Students will be responsible for reading chapters covered in the class before
class and do the learning exercise assignments which are meant to enhance the
lecture. Class time will be devoted to discussing content, presenting enrichment
materials, answering students' questions.
