The Ashland Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, March 23, 2015, at the board office
of 1820 Hickman Street, Ashland, KY 41101. Chairperson Frank DeMartino called the meeting to
order.

Minutes
Upon the recommendation of the superintendent, it was moved by Carol
Jackson and seconded by Charlie Chatfield to approve the minutes of the
Regular Meeting of February 23, 2015.

Mr. Gilmore introduced Eric Lambert, Head Coach for Blazer High School’s Academic Team, who in
turn introduced fellow coaches Amber Chapman, Assistant Coach, Just Imel, FPS Coach, and Katie
Bias, Subject Level Coach/writing composition grader (Karen Scalf, Writing Composition Coach). Mr.
Lambert informed the Board that at the JV Challenge in early November, Quick Recall placed 1st, and
the team scored 1st over-all. Students who competed include: Wren Jenkins, Shelby Conley, Zach
Stafford, Isaac Vinson, William Zheng, Nate Rickman, Harrison Hall, Derrek Baer, Dawson Coovert,
Hannah Depriest, and Will Fisher. Students who competed at Governor’s Cup include: Cameron
Garner, Jonathan Dingess, Jason Zheng, Nate Rickman, Hannah Wade, Shelby Street, Dawson
Coovert, Wren Jenkins, Lesley Phillips, Meredith Sergent. FPS Team placed 1st at districts and 4th at
region and members include: Aidan Young, Haley Pierce, Hannah Reece and Hannah Gillette. Quick
Recall placed 1st at districts, 2nd at region and top 16 at state. Over-all 1st at districts and 2nd at
region.
Chuck Trimble, Murphy Graves Trimble updated the Board on the Putnam Stadium locker rooms. By
next month’s meeting, they should be complete. Ashland Middle School renovation is still going well.
They received a price for the drainage issue, but sent back for cost comparison and they should have
that back very soon. The updating work for Alumni Gym is ready for release to bid. Blazer’s building
7 design development documents are in the works. They will be exploring more under building 7 as
the ground dries out to get a better idea as to what will be involved for the renovation.
Cary Williams, Director of Instructional Technology updated the Board on the elementary and middle
schools’ participation in recent robotics competitions at Rupp Arena and Morehead State University.
Some of Charles Russell’s Robotics students attended the meeting and presented a video to explain
what being on the robotics team is all about and what it’s like to participate in competitions. Members
of the team include: Caleb Campbell, Eli Campbell, Isaac Campbell, Bethany Ledford, Noah Cary, Luke
Geyer, Tyler Miller, Richard Runyon, Melanie Grimm, and Noah Crites.
Director of Student Achievement Richard Oppenheimer, and Director of Student Services Lisa Henson
presented a proposal to adjust elementary attendance zones to the Board. This would be a five-year
phase-in starting with Kindergarteners next year. The goal is to get all elementary schools as close to
“equal” in enrollment as possible.
Jacqui Thornburg, Ashland Head Start Director presented the PIR Report, USDA Report, CLASS
Winter Student Assessment, Plan for Children with a Home Language Other than English,
Disability Service Plan, Early Child Development and Curriculum Plan, and Transition Plan.
