Uppsala 2013-12-18 Dairy products, a guideline for you who want to bring in or import products according to the KRAV standard edition 2014 chapter 16 Introduction This document is intended to be a guideline for you who intend to sell the product to another company with the intention to use it with the KRAV-logo on. Specifically, it explains how to fulfill the Extra Requirements in KRAV standard 16.1.3 relevant to dairy products, but it will also list other supplementary requirements that may apply. The purpose of the Extra Requirements is to ensure that the ingredient or product has been produced according to production methods equivalent to the KRAV standard, even if the certificate refers to Regulation (EC) no 834/2007 Dairy products are foodstuffs made from mammalian milk. It can be milk from cow, buffalo, sheep or goat and products made from that milk, like milk powder, butter, cheese, different yoghurts and ice-cream. Also, any product, which contains such an ingredient, will need the consideration of the additional demands to be KRAV-labeled. Extra Requirements for Dairy Products certified according to Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 or IFOAM-accredited certification KRAV standard 16.2 covers all extra requirements for animal products, but this guideline covers only the aspects relevant to dairy products. If your dairy product or ingredient has a certificate according to Regulation (EC) no 834/2007 the Extra Requirements to obtain a KRAV certification are: Natural Behaviour Mother animals must be able to give birth in solitude. Young and mother animals must be able to have close contact during the young's first period of life. Calves must be able to suckle at least for the first 24 hours after birth. Lambs and goat kids must be able to suckle at least for three days after birth Grazing and grazing intake During the vegetation period all types of animals must have access to grazing during most of the day. Temporary exemption from the requirement of access to grazing can be given for: mating, insemination, giving birth, sickness, serious insect attacks, extreme weather, slaughter – at the most two weeks before slaughter. Withdrawal Period If allopathic pharmaceuticals are used that have an approved withdrawal period of zero days then a withdrawal period of 48 hours must be applied. How to demonstrate that the Extra Requirements are fulfilled It is the Certification Body, hereafter referred to as CB, that performs the audit according to the KRAV standard that will decide if the documentation that you can present is satisfactory and fulfill the KRAV standard 16.2 and the rest of the Extra Requirements. Depending on your companies place in the chain of custody, you may either collect these documents directly from the producers or ask your supplier to present them. The documentation should be verified by an independent body. Independent bodies could be a veterinary or another authority, but preferably the CB that performs the organic certification according to EC-regulation 834/2007. They can make an extra verification in addition to the ordinary organic certification A typical example could be the following; A cheese producing company in a country within EU produces an organic cheese that a Swedish importer wants to sell in Sweden with the KRAV logo. The Swedish importer asks for documentation according to the above. The cheese producing company can show that they buy all their milk from farmers belonging to a few organizations with internal contracts regulating different aspects of production. It is possible for the producing company to include the KRAV standards as shown above in their general management plan, and verification is done in the same way as other quality demands are fulfilled. In this case an arrangement has to be made with the CB so that the documentation is sent directly to the CB which keeps it confidential for the importer. The CB includes the documentation in the audit and needs to obtain it in a way that links it to the relevant products, but the CB marks the archive of this part of the audit as confidential for its client. Exception – the 95 percent rule The KRAV standard 1.1.3 states that at least 95 percent by weight of a product has to fulfill the KRAV standard, not counting the weight of water and salt. This means that for a product where the content of the dairy ingredient is less then 5 percent, and there is 95 percent of other ingredients being KRAV-certified, it is possible to use the organic ingredient in the product without regard to the additional demands. In this case, in the ingredient list, the ingredient should be declared as organic and not KRAV-organic. Example, chocolate with less then 5 percent milk powder: Cacao*, sugar*, cacao butter*, milk powder**, vanilla*, *KRAV-organic ingredient **EU-organic ingredient Please observe that the way to calculate the content is different from regulation (EC) no 834/2007. According to EC-regulation only the ingredients of agricultural origin are included in the calculus but in the KRAV standard all ingredients except water and salt. Other KRAV-standards that may apply Social responsibility You find the information you need in the document “Guideline Social responsibility 2014” ” Old-growth and natural forests If an ingredient is produced from soy bean or oil palm or any other plant product and has an origin in areas of old-growth and natural forests, then the Extra Requirements according to KRAV-standard 16.2.1.3 is needed. Greenhouse production If an ingredient is produced in a greenhouse, then the Extra Requirements according to KRAVstandard 16.2.2.2 is needed. Animal products other then dairy products If an ingredient is an animal product other then diary products, eg meat, egg or fish, please refer to the different applicable guidelines. Direct certification according to KRAV standards The above guideline shows the normal way to demonstrate equivalence to the KRAV standard. Another possibility that can be feasible in some cases is to have your company directly audited according to KRAV standards. The KRAV webpage www.krav.se gives information on which certification bodies are accredited for certification. You may also ask your own CB if they have any possibility in this respect. Note that in the case of direct certification, not only the supplementary requirements in chapter 16 apply but also Extra Requirements in KRAV standard chapter 1, 2 and 9. For more information.
