RECITAL GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Recital Navideño is an exciting annual event that inspires camaraderie, nurtures growth, and brings out the best in our students. It is also a fantastic opportunity during the festive holiday season for dancers to show family and friends what they’re made of!

Produced by the National Institute of Flamenco (NIF), Recital Navideño showcases the hard work of each class at the Conservatory from Baby

Flamenco through Adult Level 4, as well as the work of NIF’s performing companies Niños, Teeños and Alma. The material performed is worked on in class throughout the year, but will be made performance-ready from now until the recital.

Each of the three performances opens with a Conservatory-wide Tangos

Parade, in which all classes are on stage together, with the exception of Baby and Intro to Child. Following the parade, each child class will present choreography, beginning with Baby and Intro to Child, and ending with

Niños before intermission. The second half of the show begins with Los

Posadas, our flamenco interpretation of the traditional Christmas story.

Following Los Posadas, our adult classes will perform, as well as Teeños and

Alma. The show will close with all adult levels performing the bulerias patadas.

During and leading up to the recital, we will be fundraising for our

Conservatory scholarship program through a new 50/50 raffle, as well as sales of flowers, wine and a holiday ornament making competition.

Scholarship fundraising is a huge part of Recital Navideño, and we encourage you to get involved! More on these initiatives can be found on pages 11-12.

TICKETING

Invite your family and friends to join us at the Recital Navideño! Tickets will sell out long in advance. Every year, we have to turn people away who don’t have advance tickets. Encourage your audience members to buy now to prevent disappointment later!

Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, October 20 th, 2015.

Prices: $25 for premium and $20 for general seating.

Tickets will be available through UNM Ticketing Services:

Rodey Theatre Box Office (UNM Bookstore)

The Pit (Wisepies Arena)

By Phone at 505-925-5858 (UNM Ticketing Services)

Online at www.unmtickets.com

Things to Remember:

If you are a volunteer helper, please make sure the performance you purchase a ticket for does not conflict with a Volunteer Assignment, outlined on pages 9-10.

Parents are not required to attend all three performances. You may drop your children off and pick them up after they perform. All child classes will be finished performing before intermission, with the exception of children in Los Posadas.

On the day(s) you watch the performance, your child can join you in the audience after they perform only if they have a ticket . This is a Rodey Theatre policy over which NIF has no control. During the recital, all children are under the supervision of assigned room monitors unless checked out by their parents.

Children ages 2 and under will not need a ticket if they are with a paying adult and are seated on an adult’s lap

CHILDREN’S CLASSES COSTUME FITTINGS

Students in children’s classes (Baby Flamenco, Intro to Child, and Child 1-5) will be fitted for and assigned a costume for Recital Navideño. This costume rental is required to perform. Unlike in prior years, parents will not have to do a costume pick up and return . Instead, the costumes will be hanging in dressing rooms for final dress rehearsal and each performance. These costumes will be left in the dressing rooms after each show. There is a nonrefundable children’s costume rental fee that covers fitting, alterations, cleaning. The last day to pay your rental fee is Saturday, November 7th.

WARDROBE REQUIREMENTS

Students in adult classes need to assemble and/or create their own costumes for Recital Navideño. Please see Tangos Parade below for costuming guidelines. These students may wear the same costume for the entirety of the evening if they wish. The Adult Classes at the Conservatory of Flamenco

Arts are Intro to Flamenco, and Level 1-4.

Students in child classes will wear their assigned class costume only for their class presentations. Please see Tangos Parade below for costuming guidelines. The child classes are Baby, Intro to Child, and Child 1-5.

Girls who have costume changes should wear a nude colored camisole leotard under their costumes to make quick changes easier. These will be available for purchase at our on-site store Flecos y Lunares, or at any dance supply store. They should also wear undergarments that will smooth unsightly lines. (Spanx are a great option)

As previously mentioned, boys are required to wear black pants, a solid colored dress shirt and a black vest. Parents are responsible for providing these items. See our store for options.

To prevent losing accessories and street clothes, keep your or your child’s belongings in a knapsack or suitcase. For storing items such as earrings, flowers, etc., a zip lock bag with your child’s name on it is highly recommended. We cannot be held responsible for lost items.

Tangos Parade:

The Tangos Parade is a group number showcasing all of the classes and levels at the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts with the exception of Baby

Flamenco and Intro to Child Flamenco. The Tangos Parade is the first piece of the evening, children and adults should wear a costume of their own creation. Dressed-up and accessorized rehearsal skirts and tops can be turned into appropriate costumes for this number. Many of these items are available at Flecos y Lunares. Come and browse our store for some great costume ideas!

5

HAIR, MAKEUP AND ACCESSORIES

Hair:

Female students should style their hair in a low bun at the nape of the neck and pinned to the head inside a hair net. Wavo-Nets are superior hairnets, and will be made available at our store as well as at Sally Beauty Supply.

Secure with lots of bobby pins, hairspray, and gel. Below is a great flamenco bun tutorial on Youtube. For the sake of consistency, hair flowers should be pinned high on the crown of the head, instead of behind the ear like shown in the video. Artificial flowers will be available for purchase, or you can find your own. However, they should specifically be roses, not other types of flowers. Any color is acceptable for the tangos parade, but be sure to check with your teacher to find out whether there is a specific color flower for your class performance.

Link to hair tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuJeUBLmJmQ

Makeup:

Stage makeup application is very different from daily wear, and it should be dramatically exaggerated. Though it may look silly up close, your makeup needs to give your face definition visible from the back row of the theater.

Make sure you have darkly lined and shadowed eyes, lips, and eyebrows.

Blush under the cheekbones has a striking effect. Bring your makeup with you to the theater in case it needs touching up.

Accessories:

Big, light-weight earrings are encouraged, as are hair flowers, hair combs, peinetas, sparkly barrettes, and fringed shawls. Many of these items can be found in the store. Please do not wear bracelets or anything that will interfere with movement.

SPACING REHEARSAL SCHEDULE

We have worked to reduce the number of hours students must spend in the theater during rehearsal week, as we understand that it is a busy time for many of our dancers. Please be sure to be present at every rehearsal your class is scheduled. Rehearsals will begin on Saturday, the week prior to performances. All rehearsals will be held at Rodey Theater at UNM

Campus. All students will sit in designated areas of the theater and wait to be called onstage. Children will be supervised and led onstage by their appointed class leader. Adults may leave, and parents may take their children upon communication with their monitor, once their class is finished rehearsing.

NEW!!! 50/50 RAFFLE TO FUND CONSERVATORY

SCHOLARSHIPS

Prior to this year, The Conservatory has hosted an annual silent auction during

Recital Navideño, from which 100% of the proceeds go toward partially funding 30 students’ conservatory tuition for one year. These scholarships are awarded based on financial need, dedication, and talent.

This year however, in lieu of our traditional silent auction, we are planning a

50/50 raffle to fund scholarships awarded for the 2016-17 academic year. In order to sustain our current scholarship budget, the Conservatory needs to earn

$8,000. This means that $16,000 must be raised through 50/50 raffle sales. The other $8,000 will be awarded to the lucky ticket holder. The more tickets sold, the greater the jackpot grows!

In past years, we have solicited one silent auction item from each conservatory student. This year, we ask instead that each of our students sell 5 raffle tickets at $10 each. Anyone who sells a sixth raffle ticket will receive one free ticket to

Recital Navideño. 10 raffle tickets sold will earn 2 tickets to the Recital. Help us get the jackpot to meet and exceed our goal! The sky is the limit.

At our goal of selling 1600 tickets, 1 ticket = 1/1600 chances of winning

$8,000. The more tickets someone buys, the greater their chances of winning!

Buy a few for yourself, or pool together on 10 with family or friends!

The last raffle sales will be offered during intermission at the Sunday performance. The drawing will be held onstage at Rodey Theater directly following the performance, but the ticket holder does not need to be present to win. Raffle tickets will be available for pickup on Saturday, October 24 th .

Good luck, and Happy Holidays!

OTHER FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES

HOLIDAY ORNAMENT MAKING COMPETITION AND AUCTION

This year, the staff of NIF invites our Conservatory families to take part in an ornament making competition!

Break out the glitter, sequins, felt and glue! Anything goes for this fun holiday fundraiser. Bring us your most beautiful and most bizarre creations. Ornaments will be displayed in a small silent auction in the lobby of Rodey Theater during each night of the recital performances. Each ornament will have a bid sheet, and the ornament with the highest bid wins the competition for that evening!

First place will receive 3 50/50 raffle tickets (see next page), second place receives 2 raffle tickets, and third place receives 1 raffle ticket. New ornaments will be accepted and displayed as they arrive. All ornament sales go toward the

Conservatory Scholarship Fund.

MYSTERY WINE TABLE

We’ll continue our tradition of selling mysteriously wrapped bottles of wine, categorized only by red or white- for a flat price in the lobby at Rodey Theater.

You never know what you’re going to get! All proceeds go toward the

Conservatory Scholarship Fund.

FLOWER SALES AND RETAIL

Fresh flowers will be for sale in the lobby. Congratulate your little dancers with a bouquet after the show! And Flecos y Lunares will be onsite, selling this year’s commemorative Recital Navideño tee-shirt, in sizes to fit babies through adults!
