President’s Letter
Fall 2015
Dear Initiate and returning Members,
The Student Accounting Society welcomes you! The Student Accounting Society is a
professional organization, established in 1974, which unites students preparing for a career in the
accounting field. Student officers with the help of our faculty advisor, Mr. Leigh Rosenthal, lead
SAS.
Our goal is to help you discover your place in the field of accounting. At our Thursday
meetings held at 4:30 pm throughout the semester, you are able to network with accounting
professionals and learn more about their firms’ daily operations. Additionally, we provide
opportunities for you to speak with accounting professionals on a more personal level. This is made
possible through events such as our social, meeting, volunteer and professional events. SAS is a great
way to make connections with the right professionals and give yourself the best chance at having a
career with your dream accounting firm after graduation.
In addition to preparing you for a competitive job market, we work hard to give back to our
Central Florida community through Relay for Life, Coalition for the Homeless and other community
outreach projects. Finally, we want you to have fun and make connections with your fellow
accounting majors. Whether it is at our initiate picnic or through our coaching program, you are
bound to find someone you can relate to and who can answer any questions you may have.
The attached initiate requirements are designed to help you be acquainted with SAS, its
officers, and its members. Member status is obtained when the attached packet is complete, dues
have been paid, and you have participated in the mandatory events and meetings.
SAS will also work very closely this semester with Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), the accounting
honors organization, which gives you more opportunities to gain additional knowledge about the
accounting field and build your resume. We want you to get the most possible out of SAS this
semester! If you have any ideas, suggestions, or areas you would like to get more involved in or learn
more about, please reach out to one of the officers. I look forward to getting to know you and I hope
we have a wonderful Fall semester!
Sincerely,
Sarah Oliveri

Mentoring Program Anticipations
Our goal for this program is to allow students to gain information outside the classroom that
will benefit them for careers in accounting from shared experiences from prior members…
In this program, current members can volunteer to be “coaches”, who will be paired with current
initiates or returning members.
Mentors:
As a Mentor of the Student Accounting Society, it provides a unique opportunity to gain
responsibilities of leading new initiates or members. You will have the privilege to assist in implementing the
basic standards of the club. During SAS events and sponsored activities, opportunities will arise for you to get
to know these new initiates or members on a personal level to allow them to feel comfortable. This includes
giving friendly tips on how to network during meetings, social, and volunteer events in order to ease their
comfort levels with firms and helping them meet their point requirements for induction or retention in our
club.
Keep in mind some of the conflicts that may arise that you need to be able to overcome are small talk,
vocabulary / accounting topics, asking valuable questions, job search cover letter, resume, follow-ups.
Pairs:
Our pairing system is based on accounting knowledge and personal interest. In the initiate application
packet there will be questionnaire of interest. Pairs will be announced at the initiate picnic. We encourage our
pairs to form their own study groups and interact beyond the events of SAS. Our main objective is to ease the
transition into and retain membership.
SAS funded events for our coaching program will be announced prior to the event. Although being a
part of the coaching program is pre-assigned, the events are not mandatory. Attending the events however will
be rewarded in bonus points. Bonus points are points in a separate category that can be used to supplement the
absence of points in any other category.
Contact:
The leader of the mentoring program is the current SAS Secretary Daniel Greenwald. If any questions
may arise, please email secretary.sas.ucf@gmail.com.
