Group Assignment: Metaphysical and Cavalier Poetry
The purpose of this project is for you:
to become familiar with the characteristics and writers of the Metaphysical and Cavalier poetry movements
to be able to identify these characteristics in representative works of poetry
to work with and compare several similar sources in a methodic manner
to prepared for more advanced university-level research work
to work collaboratively instead of cooperatively and
to follow detailed instructions and official reference format specifications (MLA).
Read these instructions and follow them carefully.
1. In groups of three, recollect (print and bring to class) six DIFFFERENT documents from reliable and advanced sources with information on
each of the two movements: Metaphysical and Cavalier poetry. Use Google Scholar. The information will include characteristics, main
authors, their works, and sample poetry. This means that each student will contribute two documents: one for each movement. Total
number of documents per group: six.
2. You will work collaboratively, not cooperatively, searching for the characteristics, the writers and representative poems of each
movement. This means that you will integrate the information, patiently read to each other, in groups, the three documents for each
movement.
3. How will you do it? Highlight the characteristics that are repeated in the different documents with one color, and highlight what is
unique to each article in another color. Make any necessary annotations on these documents. (“Cooperatively” means that each student
is in charge of a different task. “Collaboratively” means that you work side by side, one task at a time.)
4. Type a list of the main characteristics for each movement discovered in the three texts you have.
5. For each movement, make a list of five representative poets and their main works.
6. For each movement, find one representative poem. Total: two poems.
7. Show your analysis of each poem with annotations and illustrations, pointing out the fragments that represent typical characteristics of
Metaphysical or Cavalier poetry.
8. Each poem should have a glossary.
