5JK Class Newsletter Term 1 2013 A MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENTS Our Science and Technology topic ‘Way out Communication’ focused on different forms of communication. 5JK students have embraced the class blog and evaluated the unit as part of their final assessment. Here are some of their thoughts: My favourite part of the unit was doing the Braille lesson. It was fun learning about the history of Braille and even using it. Jeremy Tran My favourite part of this unit was the computer program. We needed to choose a form of communication and write about it. I had plenty of fun doing it. Merna Matti My favourite lesson was making the phone. I made it with my partner Chantelle. We had trouble trying to poke a hole in the plastic cup but it was fun. Bianca Wong My favourite part was making phones with the cup and nylon string because it was amazing. I've learnt so much about communication that we even do it at home. I hope we do something fun again next time. Mika Taulu A message from Miss Bushby and Mrs Kyriacou Hello and welcome to the 5JK newsletter! Our classroom is a fun and dynamic learning environment. Students are able to complete exciting learning experiences with the use of technology. All students enjoy working on the mini laptops and are very excited about the prospect of using the new iPads! Here are some of the topics we have been learning about: LITERACY: We have started preparing for the upcoming NAPLAN assessments. Our class is refining their persuasive writing skills and are learning how to make clever inferences whilst reading. MATHS: We have been participating in fun problem solving activities during maths groups with our lovely support teachers Miss Batten and Mrs Macmillan. HSIE: Our students have been very eager to learn more about Japan and its culture. They have a high interest in topics such as Japanese cuisine, art and sumo wrestling! We have even learnt some ancient Japanese proverbs and practised writing using hiragana and kanji! THE TERM AHEAD – TERM 2 NAPLAN: 14th 15th 16th and 17th May, 2013 Hyde Park Excursion: o Monday 20th May (Yr. 4, 3/4T, 4K) o Monday 27th May (3S and 3F) TERM 4 CAMP: Bathurst nd 22 , 23rd 24th October 2013 (WEEK 3). OUR WORK As part of our Writing program earlier this term, we focused on refining our sentence structure whilst creating interesting stories. Shantel Luong has impressed everyone with her dazzling vocabulary! Below is her original story ‘The Castle Battle’ One dreary morning there was a thick fog. Then suddenly a boulder came straight through the fog and smashed into the castle’s turret. “Aaaah!” screamed everyone in the castle, except for the knights. Soon, hundreds more boulders came flying through the air and started damaging the castle’s protective walls. The knights had no choice but to open the gates and charge. They came to a battlefield. They couldn’t see their enemy but they could hear horse hooves. The fog lifted but it started to rain. The knights soon found out that their enemies were the barbarians. They suddenly charged at them so the barbarians did the same. The knights fought hard, drawing out swords and daggers. Teba enjoying the Easter Hat Parade We celebrated the Easter Hat Parade during Week 9. 5JK worked with 1E and 2G to create beautiful hats with the theme ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Our class enjoyed being role models for the younger infants students. REMINDERS: Tissues “Draw out your weapons and fight!” exclaimed the knights’ general. Clothing labels The barbarians took out their axes and started fighting the knights. The fight carried on for hours and days. Blood was smeared all over the rocky land and dead bodies were lying lifeless on the rocky ground. School newsletter and website: link The war ended. There was an endless moment of silence because everyone had died. Not even a single sound could be heard. There was dried up blood and half rotten bodies lying on the rocky land. A few years later, life came back to normal because new knights were born. They were equipped with better weapons, such as guns and cannons. The name ‘knights’ was changed to ‘soldiers’ and barbarians were never heard of again.
